David Report 5 Jul 2024 17:33

I have a Bessie Beale as my Grand Aunt born 1877 Beckley Sussex . I can find her on the 1881,1891,1901 Census but after that nothing . No marriage or death certificates.
Any help would be appreciated.

ErikaH Report 5 Jul 2024 17:54

Was Bessie her official birth name?

Where was she in 1901?

have you tried searching using the name Beal - no final ‘e’?

Does she act as a witness to the marriages of any of her siblings after 1901?

ErikaH Report 5 Jul 2024 18:00

There is a record on FMP for a woman of that name aged 42 in 1919 arriving in San Francisco

No image, so info is limited

ErikaH Report 5 Jul 2024 18:31

In 1901 she and her younger sister Matilda were servants in Maidstone, Kent.
Bessie was a Cook

ErikaH Report 5 Jul 2024 18:50

She is in a number of GR trees……….are all the ‘owners’ known to you? If not, one or more of them may have additional info

alviegal Report 5 Jul 2024 20:46

There is an article in The Bath Chronicle, 26 Feb 1916 titled AN ENEMY ALIEN.

Basically George 54, a baker of 13 Alexander Rd was in front of the Magistrates charged with being an enemy alien and failing to report himself when he moved districts.

He had moved to Bath from Margate about 16 months previously and thought that registering in Margate was sufficient. He had come to England in 1879 and had an English wife and 4 children.

He was fined £5 or a month's imprisonment and the bench hoped that the publicity surrounding this trial would send a 'very definite warning' to any other aliens in the district to comply with registration.

He described himself as being 'half Scotch and half German.'

alviegal Report 5 Jul 2024 20:54

George in 1901 so not the one in West Ham.

In 1881 George was in Westminster

ErikaH Report 5 Jul 2024 21:19

Eliza Christina D Hess was with aunt and uncle in 1871 and 1881 in Camberwell

The key to the query may well be to find her in 1901

ErikaH Report 5 Jul 2024 21:52

Newspaper article on FMP dated 25/11/1899
Streatham News

Elizabeth Huttell, wife of a Baker, living away from her, was summonsed by the NSPCC for wilfully neglecting two children, etc etc

She was at 25, Thicket Wood Chambers

Her husband had at some stage allowed her £1.00 per week, but reduced it to 15shillings

May be totally unconnected, of course

There are, however, two likely births in W Ham on freebmd, as the neglected children were 8 and 5 at the time of the court case

defendant sentenced to 3 months with hard labour

ErikaH Report 5 Jul 2024 22:00

Bessie’s son Raymond on 1939 in Bath as HUTTELL, with wife Lily

Irrelevant to the OP's query about Bessie Beale - but just following George Huttel's wife -

As already posted, Elizabeth C D Huttel was discharged from Southwark workhouse in 1904.

She was there again in 1905, listed as Eliza Huttel.
The "observations at admission" column says:
Police. "Mental"

The two West Ham births mentioned by ErikaH:

Births Sep 1891
Huttel Elizza Christena D W. Ham 4a 164 (Doesn't seem to be on GRO site)

In 1901 both girls are boarders with a nun, Sister Frances Beadon, Margate.

(Both are on Ancestry trees)

??? Other children?? Both died in infancy, in 1895 and 1896.
