Hi, As some of you know ive been trying to find my Gt Grandad's birth record now for 2 months and my mum tried for 6 years and its still not been foundso i took some of your advise and ordered his 1st childs birth certificate which i got today, her name is Enid Joy Askew born on 25th december 1915 reg in 1916, there is also an address on there, 26a Estella Avenue, Merton, Surrey which my Gt Grandad was living at the time, also it says his occupation is a chauffeur and in brackets ( mechanic) so im now confused as thought he was in the army at some time, a Gordon Highlander, on his marriage cert it says a chauffeur, someone has said he may have been a chauffeur in the army but now im more confused lol, is there anyway of finding the census record for that address above then hopefully his place of birth is on it? ive done endless searches and so have alot of other people and i dont know what else i can do now. Oh and theres no army numbers on this cert either. Thanx people Joanne

Joanne He may well have been an Army chauffeur. Although WW1 started in 1914, conscription did not start until the end of 1916. OC

An olde croan, What does conscription mean plz? Joanne

An Olde Crone

An Olde Crone Report 7 Oct 2006 22:47

Joanne Conscription means that men HAD to go - they were called up, in other words. Before that, men went voluntarily. But the losses of our men were so heavy that the Government brought in Conscription - the first time this had ever been done on a national scale (I think!) WW2 was conscripts right from the start.
