Dominique, We can't say if it's the correct one or not. Only you have followed your tree back from you ... and if your Dad says he WAS born in Scotland then it figures that you HAVE got Scottish connections, regardless of what your Mum says peeps. If you have sent for certificates along the way, then you can only use the information which they provide. As an outsider looking in, then yes, I would say we have put you on the right tracks, BUT we haven't got all the facts in front of us ... only you know the full story and only you can do the research peeps, we can only help some of the time with help and guidance.... Elaine ;-)

I am!!!! My grandfathers name on my mums side was Cyril Smith! I'm stightly stuck with that. Luckily he was the youngest of 9 children and born in 1904 so I'm starting by looking at the Welsh census' of 1901 and seeing if I spot a household with his siblings names in it.

Unknown

Unknown Report 4 Aug 2006 15:48

I'm presuming he did NOT have a middle name ... and from what you have just said, he was possibly from Wales. There is only ONE Cyril Smith born in Wales 1904 ... there are 3 others with midddle names: Births Jun 1904 Smith Cyril Bedwelty 11a 107 Births Mar 1904 SMITH Cyril Roy Bedwelty 11a 88 Births Sep 1904 Smith Cyril Arthur Pontypool 11a 190 Smith Cyril Henry Cardiff 11a 413 His Birth cert would confirm his parents names. What are his siblings names ?? ... maybe they too were born in Wales ? Alternatively, your granfathers Marriage cert will tell you HIS fathers name and occupation ... so you will KNOW when you have found the correct family on the census... Elaine ;-)

Just phoned my grandmother - the Smiths were actually from Gloucestshire (its her fathers side thats from wales) Cyril Smith 1904 (had no middle name) siblings I know the names for William, Thomas, Minnie, Elizabeth, Gladys My grandmothers brother cyril Bowen 1910 actually married one of his siblings children (I think it was Williams) daughter Mayme (not sure how you spell that)

Any idea if Minnie was her actual name or if it was short for something else ? Elaine ;-)

Dominique

Dominique Report 4 Aug 2006 16:40

Me and my mum were debatiing this the other day. Its short for something. our family is quite wierd on both of my mums parnets sides. grandfather Cyril was also known as Tom even though he had a big brother called Tom and my gr grandmother was a Harriet Jane but was also known as Jenny

Unknown Report 4 Aug 2006 17:02

Minnie is a name in it's own right ... but can also be short for Wilhelmina ! .. and others. Ginny (Jenny) is usually a pet name for Jane, but is a short version for Virginia. Do you know WHICH order these children were born in ? ... and was it actually Gloucester they lived in, or somewhere within Gloucestershire ? Elaine ;-) I HAVE found both a Cyril AND a Minnie born in Gloucester .... which is why I'm asking ! Births Sep 1901 SMITH Minnie Gloucester 6a 356

Dominique

Dominique Report 4 Aug 2006 17:11

ohhh thats interesting I have Cyril down as being born in Gloucester, Gloucestshire. and we don't know for sure if minnie is short for anything so u could be on the right track I don't know what order they were born in I think Thomas was the oldest and Cyril was the youngest. one of the siblings also died at 9 of diptheria one of the girls

Unknown Report 4 Aug 2006 17:23

Thats interesting ! We should be looking on FreeBMD for Smiths 'born' Gloucester, 1890 - 1904 ... and Smiths who 'died' Gloucester 1899 - 1912 then and cross referencing ... see which female names match ! .... and hope one of them is Minnie, Elizabeth or Gladys !! Elaine ;-)

Unknown Report 4 Aug 2006 17:34

Unknown Report 4 Aug 2006 17:39

There is a Gladys Mat Smith died J 1910 ... she was 8 years old... but can't find her birth on FreeBMD... The nearest birth I can find is 1899 March qtr. Maybe they got the age wrong ? ..I'll check the finer details... There is a Minnie Gertrude who died in June 1901 but she was 14 years old ... Not getting very far are we !

Unknown Report 4 Aug 2006 17:41

Having just read your last post, then obviously it wasn't one of them who died !! Must be another daughter that you don't know the name of ...:-((( Oh dear ... back to the census I'm afraid ! Elaine ;-)
