Hi been lurking about trying to see if I can help............can't but this is the bapt of george Nation Marquiss: Marquiss George Nation Marianne Crowcombe 12 8 1838 bn 25/7/1838

Okay, Elizabeth's baptism: Marquis Elizabeth Marianne Crowcombe Servant 11 1 1835 and George's: Marquiss George Nation Marianne Crowcombe 12 8 1838 bn 25/7/1838 If the birthdate is correct, then he WAS born after the start of civil registration so maybe his birth was registered, maybe not. I will have a look and see if I can find anything. As for the surname, the baptism register would almost certainly only have one column for 'surname', which would mean that Marquis(s) was Marianne's surname. If you can get access to the actual parish register it would be worth looking in case there is any extra information, but it does look as though the transcribers on there have been pretty thorough. Here is a George Nation baptism also from Crowcombe, who may or may not be George's father: Nation George George/Elizabeth Crowcombe Tanner 29 5 1815 Kate.

Deborah and Kelley, where did you find this reference to George Nation Marquiss Marianne please?

Suzanne Report 7 Jun 2006 13:21

Sorry Susan, computer crashed!!!!! Im going on the asumption that both parents have died so I refer to the aunt/uncle from the censuses. If you can find his baptism it will hopefully lead you to the baptism of either George senior or Marianne as well, as presumably one of them is either a brothre or a sister to the uncle in the censuses. Hope you understand. Suzanne Cant help laughing...lol....youve got everyone interested!!!!

Susan

Susan Report 7 Jun 2006 13:28

Suzanne, you're right people do seem to be interested don't they. Well, the whole lot of Marquisses are interesting right down the line, having affairs, getting married again soon after husband has died, right down to my mum who last week met her half sister that she didn't know anything about until two months ago. Those Marquisses!

I think I already posted up 'Uncle John''s baptism (1792 parents John and Betty - see page 1). As for 'Aunt Eleanor', her maiden name was Heyett so I don't think she would be Marianne's sister. But there was no sister Mary Ann or Marianne listed for John in those baptisms that I could see, only that daughter Mary that I already posted up. I am just wondering if she could be Marianne? Kate.

The only other batosim I can see to an Elizabeth and John is this one but it would have made her about 50 when she had George???? Mary Marquiss John/Elizabeth 15 7 1787 but if the death in 1841 is the father George then their ages would match??? burial of George nation: George Nation Crowcombe 7 2 1841 65 Died 30/1

Susan you need to try and access copies of the original parish records to see exactly what the vicar has written regarding the baptism of Geroge. Quite often they would put into the records who the father was thought to be. Failing that try and track down where the bastardy bonds for the area. It is possible that he was bought by the parish to agree to pay for the upkeep of his child to prevent any Costs for the Poor falling to them. As you havethe baptism date it may be worth tracing where is teh local records Office to this area and emailing and asking if they are able to look for you. Zoe
