Is there anyone that can tell me how to protect my genestree Apart from having to download it every day Maureen

How awful - that would be dreadful for anyone with no back up. Yes, you really should get a software program like Familytreemaker 2005 or even just the free PAF from the family search site. Even then, back up the program on a re-writable cd.

I had no backup at all the first time that it happened. Hence reviving the other Thread. What I do want to know is How it can happen not only once but Twice Even after changing my password Maureen

Maureen Your thread comes as a timely reminder, when I realise I have used a public access computer without signing out. If I remember correctly, you only access GR at home? Forgive me for asking, but are you the only person in your household with access to the computer? Yours is not a common problem, thank goodness, which suggests that it relates to your computer in some way, rather than the GR site. It might be worthwhile contacting someone with computer expertise, like Judy in the States, to see if they can suggest any extra security measures. Good luck, and I hope you resolve this problem.

Maureen I use the PAF sorfware from familysearch and find it very user friendly. I have a copy on my main hardrive, but I also back it up on a seperate hard drive just in case. You have to back up your information on a medium that is seperate from your main computer just in case it crashed and you have to wipe the hardrive. As for the GR family tree then I find it very time consuming to enter the information, and once n the tree is very difficult for anyone else to find their way around. But I thinks thats just me. Sorry this has hit you twice. Have you thought about setting up a webpage and uploading you tree to that. You will need a family trre software package to do this but it is worth it as it is another backup, and very easy to read by others. And the best thing is there is no other typing needed, just upload what you have. Victor

Thats what appealed to me about FTM2005. I now have quite a lot of stuff on GR, but everything on FTM2005 plus I back up the program with a rewritable cd everytime I add something and in the dire case of GR going out of business, my puter crashing and then me standing on the rewritable disc at least I will have everything still in cyberspace on the website that FTM2005 make for you.

But's that's just it. I have got it backed up. It wont let me load it back up onto the site. Maureen

Have you followed the instructions ? Not a silly question. I had bother and couldn't understand why. It was because I was using Family Tree Maker 9 and was trying to load it as a Family Tree Maker file, rather than a GED file. It also needs to be saved 5.5 GED or above. Right click the file and then click on properties and see what info it gives you. Good luck, VAL

Maureen, Unless you specifically want your FT here on GC so that you can share it with others when they ask, why don't you consider a Web Site like Tribal Pages ? its FREE ...AND you can share your tree with millions of people on the net OR .. you can password it. You can add music .. / ... photo's etc and pretty much anything goes ! Its great fun and very easy to use ... with user friendly instructions and very friendly people to ask if you have any difficulties. Its easy to back up on CD and even easier to load back up to the site via Gedcom... Have a look at some others that have web pages ... and see what you think http://www.tribalpages(.)com ... remove () If you elect to NOT password it, you can have your tree linked directly to the net, so if someone googles for a surname thats in your tree, they get a link to your site. Good Luck Dancer x

Yes I have followed all the instructions. I have been on with it for the last Two Hours and it Still Wont let me upload. The Gedcom File is The names from my genestree which I had backed up onto the Hard drive on the computer. Just in case someone or Whoever that did it the last time did it again. Maureen Ps I do have a big family tree On the Paf with over 2000 names in.

Derbyshire, I have just sent my FT2005 gedcom to that site, does it usually come available quickly? Thanks for telling us, it does seem really quite sophisticated. Nice to have the homepage somewhere else.

Usually available within a few hours I think .... BUT ... I've had my tree on there for a good year and so I can't actually remember how long it takes for anything to go up ! I know that photo's go up almost emmediately. Another good thing about it .... you can do a name search on that site as well .... and it throws up all the Pages with that name in ... a lot of people DO LOCK the tree though (like me) ... but you just send that person an email and they get back to you ... providing you give enough info for them to check. I know that when you are viewing your own tree on TP, then its really set out nicely and very pleasing to the eye. I've not actually been on anyone else's tree, so I'm not sure what they look like when your a visitor ! ... in fact, I'll go and check that out now !! Dancer x

Hi Dancer I have had my tree on Tribal Pages for a good while now but I didn't know you could put music on. Can you tell me how please? As far as uploading, I updated mine yesterday and received an email within the hour to say it had been successfully uploaded. Lynne
