Hi Jan (and everybody else) I have already sent a private apology to Jan, now Im sending a public one. Jan I am soooooooooooooo sorry. I know I'm mardy and I know you now know why, but it does not excuse my behaviour so please accept my most humble apologies. If anybody wants to have a go at me please feel free, I deserve it. Once again sorry Jan. Jane Tasker

Jane you are obviously from up North somewhere, as I havent heard the word Mardy for ages. I lot of people will wonder what it means, I will let you explain, as Im not very good at it. I wonder if anyone else have regional dilect words to talk about , and their meaning .. Joan

Hi Joan, I'm a Grimsby girl born and bred. Mardy, for the uninitiated means Irritable Peevish Easily annoyed Miserable Unhappy Wretched Behaves like a spoilt child All of the above refers to me. (But only on a very bad day) (Im usually very nice) (so my Husband says)

Jane, you are very sweet, thank you. I didn't intend to upset anybody, and am glad that everything is all sorted out. I'm from the south, but I understood mardy. What I call "mumpish" I believe, though perhaps a bit stronger. So glad you will continue to use GC Boards, look forward to helping you if I possibly can. Jan.

I am Sussex born and bred but moved here to Nottinghamshire in 2000. I had never heard of the word 'Mardy' until my daughter came home from school using it! Must admit I quite like it now as it seems to sum it all up. Where I am from we use ' Having the hump ' or ' Got the knock ' or the nearest to ' Mardy '.............' Moody ' Pam

Hi, I don't know where this came from - Trivail Pursuits probably - but I've heard that the origin of "mardy" is Welsh from the Miners' protests in Maerdy in S Wales in the 19thC. They did a sort of work to rule rather than an outright strike. Here in Warwickshire mardy was a comon expression when I was growing up. My friends and family in Wales understood what I meant but not those in East Anglia when we visited Dad's family. I wonder of it's reached there yet. Gwynne

I'm from London and I use 'mardy,' due to my friend who's from Leicester. He also says that someone's 'in a mard' His fiancee is German and she is always saying it! I had to look up a dictionary when I first heard it.

Jst got back after technical hitch on computer. Gwynne, dont think I've got any Welsh blood in me (well not so far anyway). Mum's ancestors were from Cornwall, Worcestor, Stafford and Bedford so perhaps they brought the expression with them. Can't say I'd ever thought about it before. Could just be a northern expression though.

Jan Thanks for that, feel much better today. Today is the first day of the rest of my life. I'm gonna make hay while the sun shines. Well actually it's chucking it down here in Gloomy Grimsby (that means raining everybody!!--a lot). But I'm going to enjoy life without a job for a while and stop worrying so much about everything, before I give myself a heart attack. (already got high blood pressure)

Don't know about Grimsby but its been pretty gloomy in Surrey the last few days. We all have our off days some more than others. Me I shut myself away, on the Computer and read all your messages and thats been nearly every day since this board started. Roll on summer. Irene

Christine, Happy birthday for yesterday. Hope waiting for your meal did'nt spoil it too much. Jane Hi Rosemary, Stroppy could probably sum it up. We use that word here too in Grimsby. Don't know where that one originated from.
