Hi Jane I'm from Stockton in Cleveland.Hubby from Thornaby and he's heard of Mardy but I've never heard him use it. I use to work with a young girl a few years ago now and she was called Mardy(short for Margaret).I hope she didn't know what it meant either.She was a bubbly girl nothing Mardy about her. Chris |

Well done for the apology - and for the acceptance! Life's too short to get too uptight for too long! Always used mardy when I was at school in Northampton in the 1950s/60s. Dread to think what expression is used today! Sue |

Jan Thanks for that, feel much better today. Today is the first day of the rest of my life. I'm gonna make hay while the sun shines. Well actually it's chucking it down here in Gloomy Grimsby (that means raining everybody!!--a lot). But I'm going to enjoy life without a job for a while and stop worrying so much about everything, before I give myself a heart attack. (already got high blood pressure) |

Jst got back after technical hitch on computer. Gwynne, dont think I've got any Welsh blood in me (well not so far anyway). Mum's ancestors were from Cornwall, Worcestor, Stafford and Bedford so perhaps they brought the expression with them. Can't say I'd ever thought about it before. Could just be a northern expression though. |

I'm from London and I use 'mardy,' due to my friend who's from Leicester. He also says that someone's 'in a mard' His fiancee is German and she is always saying it! I had to look up a dictionary when I first heard it. |

Hi, I don't know where this came from - Trivail Pursuits probably - but I've heard that the origin of "mardy" is Welsh from the Miners' protests in Maerdy in S Wales in the 19thC. They did a sort of work to rule rather than an outright strike. Here in Warwickshire mardy was a comon expression when I was growing up. My friends and family in Wales understood what I meant but not those in East Anglia when we visited Dad's family. I wonder of it's reached there yet. Gwynne |

I am Sussex born and bred but moved here to Nottinghamshire in 2000. I had never heard of the word 'Mardy' until my daughter came home from school using it! Must admit I quite like it now as it seems to sum it all up. Where I am from we use ' Having the hump ' or ' Got the knock ' or the nearest to ' Mardy '.............' Moody ' Pam |
