Thanks Glitter Baby.

That's Matthew's family on the 1881 census, but where was Matthew and where is he before this date?

The only thing I can think is that he was born under another surname.

At the time of his birth I am unable to find a Matthew Kellett born in the Hayfield area. I've looked at all the Matthew's born around this time in the Hayfield area and managed to trace them through on the census's.

Is there any other way I can go about tracing him if he was born with another surname?

Joanne.

Thanks Reg,

That's my way of thinking, but how would I go about tracing his birth name?

I've looked at all the Matthew's born around this time in the Hayfield area and managed to trace them through on the census's.

Is there any other way I can go about it?

Thanks,
Joanne.

He may not have been a 'Kellett' when he was born...........

The declared father's name on the marriage cert is not proof of paternity.........

Wayne,

There isn't an age on the marriage certificate, it just says 'full age'.

The date on the certificate is 02/09/1872, so if he was born in 1858 he would have only been 14 when he married.

The 1871 census shows his birth year as c1849, the 1881 and 1891 census's show c1848, the 1901 census shows c1854, and the death entry in 1912 shows c1853.

I've searched and searched for a birth for him but I'm at a loss as I can't find a birth entry anywhere.

Anyone got any other ideas?

Thanks,
Joanne.

Afraid not Janice. I know that he married in 1872, so this would have made him 14 when he married.

Thanks for looking,
Joanne.

Thanks Carrie,

I have found this marriage, and also his subsequent marriage in 1855 to Sarah Ann Rawnsley. What I'm unable to find is if this is my Matthew Kellett's father.

I have Matthew Kellett, born somewhere between 1847 and 1855 in Glossop. He married Alice Patrick in 1872 in Rotherham. The marriage certificate shows his father as Matthew Kellett, but I am unable to find my Matthew on the 1861 census or the 1851 census (if he was born then).

Matthew Kellett born c1829 in Wike maybe his father, but I can't find any proof of this, nor can I find a birth entry for my Matthew.

Thanks,
Joanne.

Thanks Janice.

I have Matthew's place of birth off the census's as Glossop, which I believe would have come under the Hayfield district.

I can't find him at all on the 1861 census, or the 1851 census (if he was born by then).

On the marriage certificate it shows that Matthew Kellett's father was also called Matthew Kellett.

I have found a Matthew Kellett born c1829 on the 1851 census, married to Marrianne and living with her parent's Stephen and Ann Pearson. It seems that Marrianne or Mary Ann died in 1855 and later that same year Matthew married Sarah Ann Rawnsley.

Matthew and Sarah are shown on the 1861 census with their children Harriett, Hannah, Eliza and Arthur.

If this Matthew Kellett is my Matthew Kellett's father then where is my Matthew on the census?

The only conclusion that I can come to (as I can't find a birth for my Matthew Kellett) is that he was born out of wedlock and has taken his mother's surname at birth and changed it to Kellett as he got older.

Is there any way that I am going to be able to trace his birth or is this the end of the line?

Thanks,
Joanne.

OK, I now have the marriage certificate.

2nd September 1872. Married in the parish of Greasbrough, Rotherham reg district.

Matthew Kellett, full age, bachelor, engine tenter, residence at time of marriage Greasbrough. Father's name Matthew Kellett, Bricklayer.

The witnesses were Robert Foster and Kate Williams. This could be the Catherine William on the 1871 census.

After looking at the marriage certificate I'm still at a loss. I can't find Matthew living with his father Matthew and still can't find a birth for him. I'm assuming now that he's been born under a different surname, perhaps he was illegitimate.

Any ideas on where I can go from here? I don't know what to look at next.

Thank you so much Glitter Baby. I'm convinced that both of these are him (1871 and 1881 census).

No, I don't have the marriage certificate, but I suppose that's my next step. At least then I'll have a father's name to go back with.

Thanks for looking Paul. 1858 seems a little far forward, but you never know. I've learnt not to take anything for granted when looking at these records!
