Just shows how the family stories are changed to suit whoever is telling the story......lol
I was told he married a distant cousin. But his mother and her father were brother and sister so they were true cousins but there was a 20 year age gap.

well I have just got the marriage certificate of Frederick Charles Johnson and lilian Annie Cantan and Fredercik father is John Johnson meaning that my grandfather leonard Smith married his first cousin in 1953 Hilda Lilian Annie Johnson.
Now on Fredeicks baptisms and consequent census he does not have a middle name so where the Charles came from I just dont know.

Little Lost Report 27 Oct 2007 07:51

just ordered yet another certificate.
yikes
At this rate I will end up a pauper like most of my ancestors

Little Lost Report 26 Oct 2007 22:01

I need to shell out another £7 for the certificate of Frederick Charles Johnson's marriage to find out who his father was.

Ok i am back now and have the certificate. At least I now know that I have been tracing the correct Leoard Smith as he puts his fathers name on the marriage certificate. But a little puzling is Hilda Lillian Annie formerly known as TAIT. says her marriage was dissolved but has her as Hilda Lillian Annie Smith aged 42 in 1957 and Leonard was aged 62 in 1957.
I am confused why she puts her name as Smith and not JOhnson. Her fathers name is indeed Frederick Charles Johnson. So I now need to find out who the parents are of Frederick Charles Johnson.
They married in the register office so thats why I couldnt find it on cityark site.

Of course I will update you but I will be away for a few days from Monday. I just hope it arrives before I go.

Went to mums yesterday. Mum and Dad married in 1952 and they never went to the wedding in 1957.

Looking forward to find out who the witnesses were as I have one sibling for the Leonard Smith that I have.

I thinl I might have this sussed lol but will wait for the certificate to see.
I found the birth of Hilda Lillian Annie Johnson 1914 and it gave her mothers maiden name as Canton so found a mariage of a Fredrick Charles Johnson and Lillian Annie Cantan. So it is Fredrick Johnson's father that I will need to know.
I will probably have to order that marriage certificate unless there are any clues on the first one when it gets here....

Little Lost

Little Lost Report 17 Oct 2007 14:59

well I think her maiden name was Johnson and she married Frank Tait so she was known to my family as hilda Tait.
WE will have to wait and see....
I have ordered the certificate so will let you know when it is here. I am still waiting for one ordered on 1st oct. Probably lost during the postal strikes.

what a little so and so my grand father was then. Looks like he lived with 2 women and had 5 kids before he finally tied the knot.

Thats great thank you for all the help. THey would only be step relations as it is Leonard Smith that is my grandfather. I really need to find his marriage to Hilda Johnson or work my way backwards to connect the 2 as cousins. I have all the details about Leonard SMith so when I find his marriage I just hope he has put the correct fathers name to confirm he is the right one.

Janice Report 16 Oct 2007 21:06

Looks like the same family had a son Stephen in 1992 in Chatham district also. Both names are linked to a Rosie in Quicksearch.
