Small blonde Angel Report 6 Nov 2007 22:47

Could anyone help me please. I have information about my paternal grandmother from an elderly aunt.
My great grandparents I am told were an Henry and Jessie Sharpe my aunt has confused me a little as she says there is a Scottish connection, but that they were born in Co Mayo.
They had the following children.
James
Henry
George
Fred
Annie my grandmother born 1903 in Tadcaster.
Florence
Sidney
Fanny
Robert.
I have looked in all the 1901 censuses I have access to, on ancestry and leitrim-roscommon.com and can find no trace of them what so ever can anyone help me please.

Thank you

Thank you Gail and Reg, I have sent for the birth certificate for my grandmother as my aunt did not have it. I have also got her death certificate. I have my paternal grandfather her husbands family going back to the late 1600s but I am totally stuck with the
Sharpes. It is driving me mad.

Hi Angela

Was there an address we can try and check out on the birth certificate - I know it is a while after the census but might be worth a shot.

What was Henry the father's occupation?

Hi Gail, I have only just sent for it as my aunt Ann said she had it but when she looked she did not. He was a Blacksmith though that I do know, but whether he was when my gran was born I do not know. My aunt is 78 and some of the information she gives me is a little confusing.

Gail, I was at a family do on Saturday and she was confusing me but one of the things that I do remember was that she said that there were some 'Rutherford' aunts and uncles. So you are a star, but she has always said my great grandfather was Henry which is why I had been looking for him under that name. I will phone her tomorrow and let you know what she says.
Thank you very very much for your help.

Hi Angela

That sounds quite promising then, He is calling himself just Henry on the 1891 so even though it was his middle name he maybe was known by that rather than his first name.

Look forward to hearing the outcome..

Gail, I phoned my aunt and although she was surprised to hear that her grandfather was called Robert Henry rather than just Henry she confirmed that Jessie was a Rutherford, it would have helped if she had been a little more precise with her information but she is a love and has been really helpful.
Your help has been really great, thank you very much.

Hi Angela

Sorry, somehow missed your reply. Thank you for letting us know the outcome of your conversation with your Aunt, well I wonder where the Irish bit came in, maybe you will find that further back down the line.

Good luck with the rest of the research.

Gail, I have now been able to go back and I found the Scottish bit, Jessie Rutherford was the daughter of James William Rutherford born in York who was the son of a Samuel Rutherford of Kirkcudbrightshire, I have found him in the 1841 census living with lots of siblings but no parents aged 16. The only adult in the house was born in Ireland so maybe that was were the Irish connection is.
I believe we have an Irish connection in my great grandmother Annie Idle nee Murphy. h\owever the 1901 census has her born in 'Newlay' Yorks which as far as I know does not exsist. I cannot find her in the 1891 census, so confused. But now I have got my Sharpes I am so very greartful to you all without you I would never have been able to get them sorted.
I can't thank you enough.

You are very welcome, interesting to hear about the scottish and irish connections.....you are going to have fun.............

Genuki says this about Newlay

NEWLAY, a hamlet partly in the parish of Guiseley, upper division of Skyrack wapentake, and partly in the chapelry of Bramley and parish of Leeds, West Riding county York, 5 miles W. by N. of Leeds. It is situated in the valley of the river Aire,

Hi folks, here is an update on my Robert Henry Sharpe and again they just love to confuse me. I sent for his birth certificate to see who his father is, I assumed that his mother's name was going to be Thompson as he was living with his grandparents in 1871 William and Ann Thompson, but true to form his mothers name is Ann Sharpe and there is no father given. So confusion reigns again. Any ideas?
