Small blonde Angel Report 2 Dec 2007 00:15

Hi LfW, keep me posted I would love to hear that we are related.
I know so little about my Sharpe relations as my Aunt Annie knows very little about them as she said there was little contact with the Sharpe side of the family. Which is why I was a bit at a loss.
Hope to hear from you soon.

Hi Gail, yes my grannie Annie was the daughter of Robert Henry Sharpe and Jessie rutherford and from that I got loads of stuff on the Rutherfords and Fanny Sedgwick etc so I can't thank you for your help.
I had some trouble finding the Thompsons in the 1851 census but that was because I was looking for them being married, I must have missed the Harriet Sharpe in the mass of boarders.
I was just looking at that smae marriage record and thinking the same as you have done,
Yes it is a lovely tree loads of skeletons in the cupboard, and we haven't even started on the Italians yet.
Your help has been great and you are so fast

On Free BMD there is a marriage for an Ann Sharp, Q4 1855, Goole Registration District....9c 719, and a man missing..

Firstly the actual image looks like

9c 72 5 or an 8

Also on the actual index (not freeBMD) for Q4 1855 there is a William Thompson, Goole Registration.
9c 72 5 or an 8

So Free BMD has a mistranscription and I think this is the marriage.

So Ann Sharpe mother of Robert Henry is actually William Thompsons step-daughter.

Hi folks, here is an update on my Robert Henry Sharpe and again they just love to confuse me. I sent for his birth certificate to see who his father is, I assumed that his mother's name was going to be Thompson as he was living with his grandparents in 1871 William and Ann Thompson, but true to form his mothers name is Ann Sharpe and there is no father given. So confusion reigns again. Any ideas?

Angela

You are very welcome, interesting to hear about the scottish and irish connections.....you are going to have fun.............

Genuki says this about Newlay

NEWLAY, a hamlet partly in the parish of Guiseley, upper division of Skyrack wapentake, and partly in the chapelry of Bramley and parish of Leeds, West Riding county York, 5 miles W. by N. of Leeds. It is situated in the valley of the river Aire,

Gail, I have now been able to go back and I found the Scottish bit, Jessie Rutherford was the daughter of James William Rutherford born in York who was the son of a Samuel Rutherford of Kirkcudbrightshire, I have found him in the 1841 census living with lots of siblings but no parents aged 16. The only adult in the house was born in Ireland so maybe that was were the Irish connection is.
I believe we have an Irish connection in my great grandmother Annie Idle nee Murphy. h\owever the 1901 census has her born in 'Newlay' Yorks which as far as I know does not exsist. I cannot find her in the 1891 census, so confused. But now I have got my Sharpes I am so very greartful to you all without you I would never have been able to get them sorted.
I can't thank you enough.

Hi Angela

Sorry, somehow missed your reply. Thank you for letting us know the outcome of your conversation with your Aunt, well I wonder where the Irish bit came in, maybe you will find that further back down the line.

Good luck with the rest of the research.

Gail, I phoned my aunt and although she was surprised to hear that her grandfather was called Robert Henry rather than just Henry she confirmed that Jessie was a Rutherford, it would have helped if she had been a little more precise with her information but she is a love and has been really helpful.
Your help has been really great, thank you very much.

Hi Angela

That sounds quite promising then, He is calling himself just Henry on the 1891 so even though it was his middle name he maybe was known by that rather than his first name.

Look forward to hearing the outcome..

Gail, I was at a family do on Saturday and she was confusing me but one of the things that I do remember was that she said that there were some 'Rutherford' aunts and uncles. So you are a star, but she has always said my great grandfather was Henry which is why I had been looking for him under that name. I will phone her tomorrow and let you know what she says.
Thank you very very much for your help.
