On marriage certificates did you have to prove who was father? Was the word of the groom or bride enough?

Paula

No proof of parentage/age is required on marriage certs. They could say what they liked!

Oh rats !!

I guess it will be like looking for a needle in a haystack. Maybe that is why so little about the family is known. Nana did say Hubert did not have the best of childhoods - maybe this is why.

Thanks to everyone for all their digging. Please feel free to investigate any bright ideas you get !!

Hi Paula.Based on the information you've received to date.....Here are my finding's.

In the 1891 census there's a Bertie Hunt born c 1887,Kensington,London as the adopted son of a

John "Honnslow" born 1824,Margate,Kent[Bath Chair Proprieter] and wife Sarah.

The relevance is that "Bertie" is a short form for Hubert ,the age is approx the same and they lived at 1,NORTH ROW.Not very far from 6,North Row ?

In the 1901 census John "Hounslow"is still living at 1,North Row.....no Bertie!....He's in the "Boy's Brigade".

I've found nothing on his mother for 1891.At a Guess with the census info available...I think she married in 1892 to Albert Walter Sheldon,Q3,1a,996.

In the 1901 census.

Walter Sheldon born c 1867,Brentwood
Ada [wife] born c 1870,Kensington,London,with children...

William 1891,Camberwell
Albert 1893,Camberwell
Frederick 1897,Camberwell.

It could be the case that Hubert's mother had no alternative but to give him up for adoption or that, the Adoptee's,could have been his Grandparent's!!

Something for you to think about.

Regard's,Tom.

The Emily Ada Hunt death in Epsom I found yesterday would be the right age to fit in with the census info. It might be worth getting that death certificate to see if the name of the informant holds a clue?

btw, interestingly, the occupation of this particular Emily Hunt's father, Thomas was given as farm labourer in one of the censuses I looked at. If I remember rightly, Hubert gave his father's occupation as farmer?

Hi Thomas and Angela

That info about Hubert being listed as Bertie is fab. I think I am going to have to order a few birth, death and marriage certificates!

I will talk to Nana and see if anything rings a bell. There was a stigma to being an unmarried mum and being 91 she may prefer not to remember - I will try though.

You have all been amazing!
