I'm back to this one again! I have now received the marriage cert and death cert for Edith May. Her marriage cert gives her father as John Smith and her mother as Ada.

I have found a listing on the 1901 census for a likely couple, both born in Crowborough, John C.1869 and Ada C.1873. Edith, if it is the right person, is listed as Edie, and is aged 3 - seems to fit so far!

My problem lies in not being able to find a birth recorded for Edie / Edith or a marriage between John and Ada.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Simon

I've never known an English marriage cert to give the bride's mother's name.

The names and occupations of the fathers of each of the couple are recorded..........

Hi Reggie,

I could be wrong on the mother's name! I left the copies of the certs at my parents at the weekend. So I could be completely barking up the wrong tree with this one.

When you get the chance to check the marriage cert........make a note of the father's occupation then ask again for a 1901 lookup.

What details does the marriage cert give for Edith and her father?

Spinster?
Age?
Father's occupation?

Edith was 43 on her marriage cert. (7 Dec 1940) and a spinster. Her father John Smith was deceased, but his occupation is listed as general labourer.
