Hi..
I am researching into Elizabeth Tuttle Born 1872 of her family.
I am looking for the name of her mother which i tryed to look for on the search records.I came accoss her father who is George Tuttle Born 1809 Shalbourn,Berkshire,England and then came to a dead end.Any help will be useful Thanks Julian

George Tuttle seems a bit elderly to have been her father!? Where did you get that info from?
Are you working backwards? You need solid proof in the form of certificates. If you bought the birth certificate of Elizabeth you would have both her mother and fathers names and then you could be sure you are following the right line.

Where have you found this Elizabeth born 1872? A marriage? A census? Where is she and with whom?

Is this them in 1881? I still find Georges age a bit dubious and he is on poor relief - there is also a big gap between the kids - so possibly a second marriage here?

Thankyou so much for supplying the information.I have Elisabeth Tuttle on my family tree with the information i got from another member's tree in relation to this person.She had Elisabeth Tuttle born 1874 married to Ernest Fellenor but i could not find Elisabeth Tuttle who was born in 1874 on any record until i changed the birth of her's to 1872 which showed up on record.

If you have a marriage you can look on freebmd for the GRO ref and then buy the cert for £7 from GRO - how do you know this is the right Elizabeth Tuttle? Youd need to get the marriage cert and see who the father was and his occupation and THEN look for her as a child.

Its only a guess and i know its important to be certain but cant find a Elizabeth Tuttle in trhe records for births in 1874.Her husband was Ernest Fellenor born 1874 so she could have been born the same time.

I'm going to jump in and spell Heather here -- you're going in circles.

She married Ernest Fellenor. We assume you *know* these are your people. Order the marriage certificate!

Then you will *know* her father's name (and occupation), and the age she stated for herself when she married. *Then* you can look further for her in the censuses and decide what birth certificate(s) to order.

Since you know they married in 1897, you can find them in the 1901 ... just not as Fellenor, at Ancestry, because they've obviously been the victims of mistranscription.

Did they have any kids before 1901? Pretty unusual name, so I'd suspect these are theirs:

Barely recognizable, but them.

A census age usually indicates a date of birth a year earlier -- most people were born after the date of census day in a year. People also just don't always report accurate ages. Wives older than their husbands might be particularly prone to minimizing. (A sister of my gr-grfather eluded me for months because she reported she was the same age as her husband, 19, when they married in 1875, and in the 1881 census. In fact, she was born in late 1854, making her nearly 21 when they married. She may or may not have known this.)

Her birthplace as shown on the original record in 1901 is actually Worcester. Ernest was born in Swindon, Wilts.

If you look through the results at Ancestry for Elizabeth Tuttle, born 1874 +/- 2 yrs, in 1891, you'll see some corrected Tuttles -- Eliza Tubble and Vera C Suttle.

Eliza Tubble is Eliza Gaitskell Coke Tuttle, the mother-in-law of that very gr-grfather's sister I was just talking about; Vera Suttle is Eliza's 2nd husband's daughter, Vera Tuttle.

That's why your post caught my eye in the first place. ;)

So you see what mistranscriptions could be doing to keep you from your Elizabeth ...

Ernest Fellenor is from Wiltshire, and in 1881 the George you're looking at was in Shalbourne. So I'd imagine this Elizabeth in 1871 is that Geoge's daughter:

1873 suggests that she was born in 1872. So you may well be on the right track -- but you need the 1897 marriage certificate to get on any track!

Earnest was born in Lydiard Tregoze, Wiltshire, England 1874:>)

I suspect Ernest got tired of trying to spell his birthplace to the enumerator in Bristol and settled on Swindon in 1901. ;) In 1901, his brother Edwin seems to have settled on Chippenham as his birthplace.

The "Worcester" for Elizabeth's birthplace in 1901 is obviously a mishearing or mistranscription of "Wiltshire".

Now order the danged 1897 marriage certificate and find out who Elizabeth's father was!

Going to order the marriage certificate today:>) Will then have to work out how Ernest is related to me or if he is.My mum did mention Elizabeth' Tuttle was my great grandmother.

So Dorothy Mabel is the only one who could be your ancestor, i.e., presumably, your grandmother. No marriage has been transcribed for her yet.

When I said "We assume you *know* these are your people", it seems we assumed too much.

Unless she had children without marrying, she does not seem to be your ancestor ... so I'm at a complete loss to understand how Elizabeth Tuttle who married Ernest Fellenor could be.
