Thank you Mary for that advice. I have always tended to put as much info in as possible in the hope of finding the right one. I will try the method you use. Perhaps this is why I do not get as much success.

Margaret, if you can't find somebody, you need to put less information into Ancestry, not more, be flexible about dates, and use wildcards.

I found Annie in 1871 by searching for Ann* Hatton born 1865 +/-5 in Scar*

I found the family in 1861 by searching for Thomas Hatton born 1860 +/-2 in Scotland.
