Find Ancestors

I'm trying to help another member trace her Balchin family but am not having much luck.

According to the 1901 census, Amos Balchin was born in Redhill, Surrey c1864. His wife Emily (nee Simmonds) was born in Kingswood, Surrey c1874.

They had a son Amos Balchin born 1901 (not on census), Thomas Balchin b1891 and Violet Balchin b1889.

I cannot find any trace of this family on earlier census records, nor can I find a marriage or birth ref for Amos.

Could Amos have been married before? Emily seems a tad young to have had Violet in 1889?

That could be a possibility, only problem is, I can't find a marriage that would fit this Amos. There is another Amos Balchin b1854, Dorking and his is the only marriage I've been able to find.

I can't find a trace of Violet or Thomas' births. The only info we have is what has come from the birth of their third child, Amos in 1901.

From the birth of Amos junior in 1901, the surname is Balchin, and mmn is Simmonds.

I'm just thinking that if Thomas and Violet are Amos' children from a previous marriage, they'd still be registered under the name Balchin..................but obviously they weren't.

Emily could have given birth to Violet when she was just 15, again not unhearded of, but there's no birth ref under Simmonds either.

theres such a big age gap between Thomas and Amos I would suspect Emily is a second wife.

As Amos married a younger woman - it's possible he lied about his age and he is the one born 1854.

Or Amos was a base-born son and used father's or step father's name in the Census but used his proper birth name after he married?

(speaks from experience of both things happening. lol)

looked at the full records for 1888/89 and Violet birth isnt listed under Balchin

I found the Mary Bullen one whilst looking for any marriage for Amos .seems a likely one as Dorking is in Surrey but there's such a big gap then to the birth of Violet. Was hoping to find Violets birth which would confirm her mums name but not found in full reg for 1888/89.

Hi all,

Yes Gary, that's the other Amos from dorking that I mentioned earlier and because he appears on the1901 census also, we know he's a different person.

The info from the ancestry tree looks all muddled up to me. Didn't the Amos from Dorking marry Mary Bullen? He was still with her in 1901 and our Amos was with Emily Simmonds in 1901.

Argh...........................I'm just about tearing my hair out here!!!!!

I think I'll go to bed because I can't keep my eyes open any longer, but I'll check back in the morning. Maybe by some miracle, someone will have found something to unravel this mystery......................................lol

Probably just coincidence?

There is a Violet Castle in the 1891 Census for Reigate. She was born abt 1889 in Paddock Wood. Parents are John and Emma. There is also a son of 4 months - John T Castle, born Reigate. Could the T be Thomas?

What is interesting is they are living next door to Thomas Simmons and family

Did you notice the Balchin Family on the same page in the 1881 Census? Levi Balchin - wonder if he was a brother to Amos?

well im,e quite convinced that amos may have lied abt his age or may-be the censuses got it wrong its possible that its the one i found earlier,
