Find Ancestors

OK ! I'm more confused than ever now !!!

Just tried following William BALL through the census and they did live in tents/caravans all the way through - this ties in with what an elderly relative can remember being told. That William never lived in a house, always a caravan.

Looking at the 1881 census there is a Sophie listed. I can just remember being told about an aunt Sophie, unfortunately the few people left can't remember her.

OH MY - do we have the right family after all, and if so WHY the name change, 'cos my Dad was definitely Waterhouse ? !

Hi, well Waterhouse would have been his fathers offical name wouldn't it,and census was just what they told the enumarator to write down! I think people will be looking for a lot of answers from the 1911 census! I for one am waiting to see who my husbands greatgrandmother is with, as all children (even in 1904)were surname Martin but she is Kite in 1901.
I think in your family if you think i may have the right ones then it could mean buying certs to see . I suppose if Elizabeth was a widow it should say that on the marriage cert.

Yes I guess you're right - certificates are probably the next stage.

The 1911 is the one that will give me my answers I think as the family were settled by then and Waterhouse was the name - but I'm no good at waiting !!! (ha, ha)

Have not been able to find a connection with a son Wiilliam in other census years though.

Oh its more and more frustrating doesn't it?!

I did find that myself and like you couldn't find William in the other census years.

I'm still drawn to the Ball connection I have to admit, I wonder if Elizabeth Waterhouse rather than a widow just wasn't married when she had William junior, this would explain her marriage to James Ball and William using the Ball name but going back to his original birth surname on his marriage? Maybe, perhaps. . . . ?

Well would he have had to show a birth cert when he got married? I like you am still drawn to the "Ball" family.Perhaps the Waterhouse/ James Ball marriage cert might give an answer if you thik it is the one

I suppose its a possiblity, I have found and ordered the marriage certificate for Waterhouse/Ball so we'll see what that turns up.

I think I may have found a birth cert for William too. 1866, 3rd quarter, Sculcoates - not sure but sounds like it might be. I'll keep looking!

I sent for the marriage certificate of Elizabeth and James Ball - turns out you were right, Elizabeth was a widow. Her father's name was Wallis Webster.

Now I know that means nothing to you BUT my uncles name was William Wallace Webster Waterhouse ! (Poor chap, we called him Sonny!)

The birth certificate I sent for has William Waterhouse as the father and Elizabeth formerly WEBSTER as the mother! After 2 years of searching I HAVE HIM ! Now I can start looking for the rest of his family.
