OOops! Look what the fairies have found out while I was asleep in bed!
Thanks for that input Viv and Rose. I have to sit and think about that one a bit....
I think Alice and Harry are only half brother/sister as Harry came to the marriage with his mother.
Dessey was definitely Bert's sister and was deaf and dumb.
Alice and Leah were definitely Bert's sisters as I have post cards from them in 1907 (eat your heart out~!!!)
Frank was Bert's brother as I have a post card from him in 1908 and he died on board the Bulwark in 1914.
Harry was talked about a lot and I have his funeral card as Harry Yapp

hmmm

OK, I've thought......
I'm sure the Yapp /Inwood connection has solved it. I'm trying to think about which cert to send for.....

I have Dessey's death cert and her date of birth was given as 13 Dec 1883

Alice Roath was therefore born Inwood but also used her stepfather's name of Yapp.

Which cert shall I send for do you think?

Hmmm.

Think Robert Inwood never died. That might explain why Selina married under her maiden name the second time.

Wow Rose!!!
Sorry I have been away as Sunday is a busy day for an organist!
Thanks a million.
I really wish my aunty Grace Roath was still alive as she would have been fascinated by all this as it has been an ongoing family mystery.
It's no good - I'll have to get Ancestry. The spelling variations make it worth its weight in gold.
Thanks so much - I've spent hours on this to no avail so far. You have really given me a leg up!

How/where should I start???
What certificates will give me any sort of proof or further information ?
I can't tell you how grateful I am Rose!

I'm surprised you're grateful Jill! I've uncovered more of a mess.

What was Robert Inwood's occupation and where was Alice living when she married in 1882 and who were the witnesses to the marriage?

Things I can't figure out right now are:

1) What happened to Alice Mary Ann born 1853?

2) Is Charlotte Dinah your Alice? There's a Charlotte Yapp born c1870 but I don't see her birth.

Jilliflower Report 4 Jan 2010 16:04

I'm rather thrilled with the "mess" Rose. I'm quite pleased to have found a 'black sheep' and even more of a mystery. I've been sitting today with all the facts in front of me and wondering which way to jump.
You have convinced me that I 'need' Ancestry - so I hope you get commission from them!!! :)
There is no hint of a second name on my Alice and I can't see how you think she might be Charlotte......
The family always had suspicions about Alice though, but she died when my grandad was quite young and the new wife (Anniie Roath) wanted him out of the house - presumably when little Willie was born.
All grist to the mill, Rose!
love
Jill
