Dolores Report 23 Jul 2015 16:10

I would like the dates Ellen and husband James were born, and any info about them. And if possible when Ellen and son John James immigrated to Canada. Ellen lived with my grandfather, William Joseph Courtney in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1916.
I found the birth certificate of John James.

This is the marriage for James and Ellen:-

Marriage quarter 4
Marriage year 1901
Registration month -

Record set England & Wales marriages 1837-2008

The marriage certificate should name their fathers (if known) and this would help find the families in the census records.

There are lots of birth records for girls named Ellen Covell. Impossible to know which might be her.

No Ellen Elizabeths.

One Ellen Eliza , but in 1862 - probably too early.

Births Dec 1862 (>99%)
COVELL Ellen Eliza Stepney 1c 508

Just going by the birth certificate of John James. born June 2, 1902. 10 Junction Road, Acton county of Middlesex. Father ,a general labourer, Mother Ellen Elizabeth (E.E. Neville)..Have no other info than above.

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 23 Jul 2015 16:35

In the 1901 census 10 Junction Road, Acton, Middlesex is a boarding house. James Neville is not there at the time.

I think you need to buy the marriage certificate for more information.

Where did you get the info that she lived with your grandfather in Winnipeg in 1916? I can't see them on the 1916 census.

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 23 Jul 2015 17:20

Did she marry in Winnipeg? But then she wouldn't have been Neville in 1916.

Re William Joseph Courtney, my grandfather. I got his attestation paper when he served in the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He lists her as his wife on that paper. She was his common-law wife as he never divorced his law full wife Josephine Clara Courtney(nee Jago). They separated in April 1916 according to the military papers. My grandfather ended up in Alberta, Canada with her around 1928.
Ellen Neville could possibly have been married to a William Allen at the time. Haven't found out when she immigrated to Canada.

does the 1916 Census not give the year she and John James immigrated?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 23 Jul 2015 19:23

The 1921 census, posted by Margee above, was posted in one of your other threads - the name Kootenay rings a bell. It's a shame the research has had to be duplicated because of different threads.

You mention his attestation papers. Is this the record? (I think also posted in some other thread - I remember mention of Skibereen.) If so, it just says his wife was Ellen Courtney - no mention of the names Neville or Covell:

William Joseph Courtney
in the Canada, Soldiers of the First World War, 1914-1918
Name: William Joseph Courtney
Birth Date: 25 Oct 1876
Birth Location: Skipperine, Tipperary, Ireland
Residence: Winnipeg, Manitoba
Relative: Ellen Courtney
Relationship: Wife
Regiment Number: 216582

I had not read the posts thoroughly ............. I completely missed that Margee had already searched the 1916 Census and found, as I have just done, that none of them can be found on there

Margee ........... does that 1921 Census say when she and James emigrated?

sorry .... just seen that you have added that information!

This is just one of many, many threads about William Joseph Courtney and it's getting very difficult to find what's previously been posted.

Yes, Sylvia, I have added immigration years to the 1921 census.

SylviaInCanada

I'm giving up ........

...... too many threads, too much information spread around on the different threads, too much duplication of efforts to find information and help :-(

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 23 Jul 2015 19:45

Dolores, don't you see the confusion that you're causing by repeatedly starting new threads about the same family? Information is being duplicated and nobody is willing to search all of your previous threads to see what has already been posted.

I thought this one was different, it was asking about different people, but lo & behold we came back to old Willie J. again!

Dolores

Dolores Report 23 Jul 2015 19:47

William J. Courtenay (Courtney) separated from Josephine C. Jago in April of 1916.
He was with Ellen Neville (nee Covell) common-law in 1928 in British Columbia. Ellen's son must have taken the Courtenay name. She had no children to my grandfather. So this last info sounds like them. Does the info read that Ellen was born around 1869 and immigrated to Canada in 1900. Curios.
