My Grandparents were born a couple of years after the 1901 census and I can pin them down in the BDM's. Very frustrating this as I've hit a wall so early. I'm considering taking on professional help but would so like to do it myself. I've paid for accesss to ancestry.co.uk but my Fathers parents just dont seem to exist. I've got my Mother and fathers marriage cert and have the exact names of their Fathers and still no exact matches. Where should I go from here?

There is no info post-1901, other than bmd's and Electoral Rolls. And only the bmd's are on line. What are the names of the people you seek? Put them on here, together with birth years and birthplaces, and see what happens. I suspect you are very new to this hobby........... Paying a professional researcher would be horrendously expensive...........and most probably completely unnecessary..as you are only at 1901............if it was 1801, it might be different. Reg

Have you found your grandparents marriages? Do you mean you found their births, or are you struggling with that?

Hi You say you can pin your grandparents births in the BMD? Are you certain of them? Have you got your fathers birth certificate to prove it or have you been given the information by him? Assuming you are correct, was your father the first born or did he have older siblings? I would start looking for the marriage a couple of years before the known first born on the full marriage index. Would you like to post details for us to take a look? Keith

More questions, I'm afraid.......... How do you know where George and Lucy were born? And are the years guesswork? Have you got their marriage cert? Reg

Reg, How do you know where George and Lucy were born? My assumption this but I think fairly accurate. And are the years guesswork? The years are very close but may not be exact. Have you got their marriage cert? No, sorry. Orangeblossom, Birth Sep 1905 Wright George Robert Gateshead 10a 989 (I really dont know about this) Birth Sep 1911 Morgan Lucy mother - Angus Morpeth 10b 795 (This is definately my Grandmother)

He was the only George Robert born in Northumberland between 1900 and 1910. The best idea would be to get their marriage cert, that way you can be certain(ish) of their ages and fathers. You can then cross-reference this with the birth certs. Once you have both their parents names from the birth certs, you can look for them in 1901, and start your way back :)

So with an exact match of my Grandmother is it possible to get their marriage cert?

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 12 Nov 2006 19:48

Lucy's birth cert will give you the full details of her parents.........that info should enable you to find them on 1901 census......failing that, you need to find the marriage of her parents, to establish the names of the respective fathers. Reg

You would need to find the reference for the marriage cert to be able to buy it. You can search the BMD register here: http://www.ancestry.*co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx

David, As Georgina has found the marriage in 1933 (Wright-Morgan), I would be inclined to check for more siblings between 1933 and 1939. Keith

David because you need to get your family back to 1901 so you can follow them on the census's I would suggest you get George & Lucy's birth certificates, you will then have their parents names & then hopefully we can find them on the 1901 census. Georgina.

George and Lucy's marriage cert came this morning. George's Father was called William James Wright and he was a miner. Assuming George lived with his parent at the time of is marriage, the address was 53 St.Marys Field, Morpeth. Lucy's Father was called Thomas Morgan and was also a miner. Their address was 9 Biltons Court,Morpeth. Now, how do I use the Fathers' names to pin down the start of my search at the 1901 census. I do know that Lucy's Mothers maiden name was Angus but this doesnt help.
