Just had a quick look at Toxteth Park and when I clicked on inmates it said 'to be added'. When I clicked on inmates for my area a whole list of names and details came up. Jane |

I agree - the workhouses site is fab!! I found my ggg grandfather in the Bolton workhouse and followed up the info in my local library with the official registers of the time - heartbreaking stuff!! I've also found it useful as a way of pointing you to further info. My gg grandmother was also in the workhouse - Prescott Union (became Whiston Hospital) (different side of the family) and was never talked about as it was considered such a disgrace. Via the workhouses site I emailed the Knowsley library for further info and received a lovely email back providing me with details of my gg grandmother's history and also telling me she had been in another workhouse prior to her death. Reading the records you get a vivid picture of how hard life was for our ancestors. It really makes you realise how lucky we are. Best of luck to everyone in their researches Maria |

Susanne & Jane, Your mentions of Toxteth Park Workhouse caught my eye. Mr husband's gt.grandfather was assistant master there in 1871. 19 other members of staff are mentioned on the same census page - Detail: Class: RG10; Piece: 3806; Folio: 118; Page: 1; GSU roll: 841907. Jo |

In Liskeard museum they have something about Lamellion workhouses and the standard of care there seemed well above the norm. The rules on bathing were fasinating.eg, water must be of a certain temperature, frail people were to be handled with care and could have as many as two baths a week if desired and a fresh towel used for every patient etc etc. I should think the conditions were perhaps better than some had in their own homes. Seeing that really cheered me. (Not that I have yet found any of mine in a workhouse so far). M |
