Well I've had a look at the 1901 image and it does say Matilda. Steve, you have to not be so rigid on spellings of surnames. I think you need to remember that not all people knew exactly how to spell back then and that if they weren't sure themselves, they wouldn't know whether to correct it on a register for a marriage or birth etc. I think your best bet would be to order a birth cert for one of their children to find her maiden name - then see if any of the Matilda's from the possible marriages match up with her. If it was Amelia Emma Bird, she is a servant in 1891 for a Caroline E Dean - a 75 year old widow.

Morning Stephen Think I agree with Alexandra on this one, I would order one of the kids certs and see what Matilda's maiden name is - it is very possible that a registrar would spell it how he heard it and it not be corrected - see where it leads you. regards Looby
