hi, this has been an ongoing problem, for a long time now. where was WILLIAM POOLE in 1881? in 1884 he gets married ,& his occupation is soldier 50th regiment, kent. he marries CAROLINE WOOD, who has a son ADOLPHUS who is illegitimate b.1880. (adolphus later becomes POOLE). william is a right pain in the butt! after endless searching, i have come to the conclusion that he too was illegitimate, and to cut a long story short i believe he was born WILLIAM PUDNEY. FINDING HIM IN 1881 WOULD BE A MAJOR BREAKTHRU! also,how can i find out anything about his army records? if anyone has any ideas , or advice i would be really greatful!

The marriage is in Maidstone registration district. Did he ever use his middle name of Alfred? Only William on 1881 that is any match on place of birth and occupation of soldier is a Smith Maureen

his middle name appears on 1 census, his marriage cert & death cert he called one of his sons alfred too.

so if hes not on the 1881, which i doubted anyway, how can i find out where he was in the army?

Is it possible he was abroad with the army in'81 You may be able to get/view records at Kew

He was most likely abroad in 1881, your best bet will be to search for his military records in The National Archives in class WO. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk Jennifer

actually, i do suspect he is abroad in 81, but if i went to kew, would i b able to find out with so little information

Yes found it on Ancestry. Might be worth someone checking the image for a second opinion. No idea what the regiment is. Maureen

jim, i just checked death cert . he was 56 in 1916. so yes he was born 1860

Ages on death certificates are notoriously unreliable, he was almost certainly born in 1856, he was four years old on the 1861 Census. thanks jennifer, yes thats the cert i have got. i just panicked about the year for a minute , but i just checked his marriage as well and he states he is 27 in 1884 so i feel better
