Heather, Jingle Babs doesn't want to save the file to her PC because she wants to use Family Tree Maker 2006 and she is frightened it will overwrite her Gedcom so she wants to make a copy to a CD. Ok, I see you have seen that she wants to save it to CD. Cheers, Horatia

Horatio and Heather;; yes wanted to save to CD and that what you talked me through the other day Heather has worked well I think it has, My friend took it home to check it but it wouldnt open for him as he does not have FTM but it has 3 files on disc which when looking at kb coverage it looks to be all there;; What the problem is we also did this GEDCOM and I tried to export to Ancestry and Tribal pages and both sites say its not a GEDCOM yet I did all that was told and yes Heather it does have symbol there but they still saying the same not gedcom;; Help what am I doing wrong;; Horatio yes it is GEDCOM and not COM ged Babs

Jinglebabs, You didn't finish your message by the looks of it. The only way you can share genealogy files with people who don't use the same family tree programme as you do, is to export a gedcom file not a FTW file. It looks as though you keep exporting FTW files and not a gedcom otherwise it would work. I think it must go wrong when you name the file. It must say .ged at the end of the file. If it doesn't then it isn't a gedcom file. By the way, do you have your extensions showing so that you can see what type of files you are saving and sending. On my PC a gedcom looks like a tree because the software on my PC associated with gedcoms is Family Tree Maker Software. Are the file icons of the files you are trying to share with people little trees? Cheers, Horatia

Horatio yes it says Ged at the end of file name and a tree with what looks like reddy branches on it; Babs

Jinglebabs, Then this is most peculiar. It sounds ike you are saving gedcoms and yet you can't do anything with them! Can't think why! The person who received that Gedcom should have been able to import it into their family tree software - was it that they didn't know HOW to do this rather than there being anything wrong with your file?! Cheers, Horatia

Horatio I was trying to send it to my ancestry and also to my Tribal page site and they both import GEDCOMS yet say mine isnt;; Babs

Horatia Report 28 Dec 2005 19:36

Jinglebabs, I have sent you a PM with my hotmail e-mail address just to check your Gedcom over to see if it DEFINITELY is a gedcom. Cheers, Horatia

Jinglebabs, That's what I want to see! I'll let you know when I take a look at it. I won't go nosing about in it - just want to see if the file format is correct. Cheers, Horatia

Horatia Report 28 Dec 2005 20:10

Hi Jinglebabs, I received your Gedcom A OK and successfully imported it into my LDS software. It was only a small gedcom about 48KB but there didn't seem to be anything wrong with it apart from the fact that there didn't seem to have many dates on it so unless the places you are trying to import it to are querying that aspect of it I don't know. For example, my people all have a birth year but when I looked at a few of your entries they didn't seem to have birth years - is this correct? Cheers, Horatia

Borobabs

Borobabs Report 28 Dec 2005 20:35

Horatio;; sorry been seeing to the dog;; Yes that would be right some are just birth years as I have loads of certs to send off for;; what I can't understand is why the likes of Ancestry and Tribal pages say its not a GEDCOM ;; any suggestions;; Babs and once again thanks for your patience;;

Horatia Report 28 Dec 2005 20:38

Hi Jinglebabs, I can only think that a lack of birth data might be causing it; but other than that I have no idea. Did you use GR to build your tree or some other programme? You could look many of the birth years up for Free on Free BMD without sending for certificates - that would enable you to enter a birth year at least. Or was it the more modern ones that you didn't enter a birth year for - a lot of the birth years seem to be private so whether that's causing it I don't know. Cheers, Horatia PS Have deleted your Gedcom now because I only wanted to see if it was saving as a Gedcom and turning up on other people's PC's as a Gedcom - it is!

Borobabs

Borobabs Report 28 Dec 2005 20:43

Its all built on the FTM and Heather told me to privatise it wounder if thats the problem;; or is the GEDCOM suppose to be listed under some other initial to export it other that FTW;; what I'm thinking of doing is deleting the 2 GEDCOMS I have and taking off the privatiasion and see if that works Babs

Horatia Report 28 Dec 2005 20:46

Jinglebabs, Give it a go but if you are worried about your details being seen by all and sundry just save it to a floppy disc or a CD. At least we have proved that you definitely have created a gedcom and it will import to a family tree programme. Good luck and let us know how you get on! Cheers, Horatia

Heather

Heather Report 29 Dec 2005 10:54

Im sure privatising it wouldnt be the problem! It only takes off the details of living people, not the whole tree.

Borobabs Report 29 Dec 2005 11:00

Jinglebabs, Well done! Good for you for perservering!!! Maybe it is the website rather than your gedcom. Have you thought about contacting Tribal Pages? Best wishes, Horatia (Gedcom Tester Extraordinaire) LOL!!!!
