Lynne Report 14 Jan 2005 15:37

Hi all I found one yesterday on 1837 oline called Ivy Geranium Yates. Her parents must have been keen gardeners! My most unusual one is a lady called Stenhous. I think it must have been a mistake by the registrar as there is no other mention of her. Lynne

My grandfather born 1875 in Norfolk, was JEUEL JABEZ GRAY. Jeuel is mentioned once in the Bible. Family legend has it that Jeuel's mother Ruth, who was illegitimate, was very devout, and she called many of her sons after Biblical characters - Samuel, Lemuel etc. My Jeuel is the only one on ancestry apart from a possible that the transcriber has *ed. In case you are wondering, it was pronounced "Jool". On the other side of my dad's family, his mum's grandfather was called EMMETS MATTHEWS. I assume Emmets was a surname used as a first name, but have yet to check this out. Sadly all the women are Eliza/Susannah/Mary with the occasional Sophia or Louisa thrown in! nell

Lisa

Lisa Report 14 Jan 2005 19:00

Going back about 100 years I've got an auntie Minerva, known to all as Minnie. Perhaps not very unusual compared to some on here, however, Minerva was the Roman goddess of wisdom, the counterpart of the Greek goddess Athina. Guess who, without knowing of Auntie Minerva, named her daughter Athina? Strange or what? Lisa

I have a Mahala and a Drusilla - both names are difficult to track because they seem to be mis-transcribed so often. I found a good link for Biblical names here, it's useful for looking up some of the more unusual ones that appear in the tree: http://www.ccel.org/bible_names/title.html
