I'm non conformist always have been don't like all the pomp and ceremony but can follow the service cos of going to a Moravian Church Grammar School, my opinion for what it's worth is each to their own if they are happy worshipping in that way so be it after all there is only one God.

Now there's a subject ripe for debate May! ;)

MayBlossomEmpressofSpring

MayBlossomEmpressofSpring Report 8 Jul 2008 17:12

Do you mean whether there is one God or not?

SallyF

SallyF Report 8 Jul 2008 17:14

Gerald, anyone who uses a book, that was written when fairly primitive humankind was trying to explain the world, as a reason for discriminating against other human beings deserves to be ridiculed imho. And when they get told 'Actually we're doing it this way, because it is the right and fair way to do it' then I take joy in right prevailing.

SallyF

SallyF Report 8 Jul 2008 17:15

Yep May. That could spark a very heated debate. :) Or in fact whether there is a God at all.

MayBlossomEmpressofSpring

MayBlossomEmpressofSpring Report 8 Jul 2008 17:19

OK let's get it started:-

I believe in one God, The Father Almight, Maker of Heaven and earth........ the creed .

What do you believe? no arguments, just beliefs .

SallyF

SallyF Report 8 Jul 2008 17:22

Not really believing in a God. Mother Nature is in my mind the whole reason any of us are here (not just on GR lol), but an intelligent force pulling strings etc isn't something that I can believe in. Especially when I see so much suffering in the world.

Here's me, happily taking joy in the distress of the poor misunderstood 'traditionalists'.

I'll take joy in the distress of anybody who causes distress to others, frankly. I admit it.

Anybody who thinks its just 'not right' for women to be able to do anything that a human being is capable of doing, and that it's just fine for men to do, is hateful. I wish all possible distress on 'em.

♥ Kitty the Rubbish Cook ♥ Report 8 Jul 2008 17:40

I don't wish distress on anyone...............but it makes me uncomfortable that some people are so deeply into their faith, that common sense and the real world passes them by.

I can't see any reason why women shouldn't be bishops.

Eldrick

Eldrick Report 8 Jul 2008 17:42

No, I cant either - if that sort of thing is what you are into. I'm not but each to their own.

But it is rather revealing that a good proportion of the church of england, albeit the slight minority, think differently.

So there we have it.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 8 Jul 2008 17:43

Oh Kitty -- I don't *wish* distress on 'em!

They choose their distress. They're at perfect liberty to choose to be decent human beings, and get distressed about things that decent human beings actually get distressed about!

Violence against women, hungry children, illegal wars ...

Sorry Kathryn..............I must have the wrong end of the stick again.

Your last sentence saying "I wish all possible distress on 'em" confused me:)

I am a bit foggy and befuddled today.... been stuck in google and am all googled out... so here I am trawling into the recesses of my memory.... forgive if anything is not quite right, facts wise, but the principles are certainly true!!

Organised religion was started and has been controlled since it began, by men and for men, because it was a force in it's own right, with power and wealth separate from the Kings... it is all about Control, Wealth and Power.... and we have the vestiges of it today in our *traditionalist churches*.... of every denomination and type, almost.... .

The marriage service, where it is asked.... *who giveth away this woman* is the traditional wedding ceremony of a woman sold in marriage to the highest bidder in order to consolidate lands, wealth and title to the husband and the father.

The church also recruited from the second sons of the rich and famous, on the whole.... again, it was about power, control and wealth.

Women had no part to play other than as a currency and a brood mare........ in most circumstances... there are plenty of exceptions to that rule I know.

So although I believe in the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost, I do NOT believe in the Church as an Institution..... it always was, and still is, all about Control Wealth and Power, no matter which Church you are looking at.

It is said in the bible that WHEREVER two or more people are gathered together to worship, there is My Temple.

For me, the Temple is in the beauty of our world.... not in the magnificent but man made edifices put up to declare that this Bishop or that is a better person cos his edifice is bigger!!

Here endeth the first lesson!!

Oh Daff.....................well said:))

MrDaff

MrDaff Report 8 Jul 2008 18:05

lol Kitty.... I had to go back in and correct the mistakes.... didn't dare stop as I was on a roll!!

Oh and forgot to say, it's about time power was devolved to women... and yes I did let my dad *give me away* as I was 17 and didn't know different!!

But the wedding vow renewal was at St Davids, was totally different...... and St Davids is not only the site of the Cathedral, but also ancient Pagan thingies....

MayBlossomEmpressofSpring Report 8 Jul 2008 18:11

Can't recall anywhere in the Bible where it says women can't be priests, bishops or church leaders.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 8 Jul 2008 18:11

Oh, I guess you're right, Kitty. If someone is hateful, then yeah, I wish distress on 'em if they don't get their own hateful way. Really does seem only fair. Still their own choice.

MrDaff

MrDaff Report 8 Jul 2008 18:23

Absolutely right May... it wasn't.... it was in the interpretation of it by men, and the exploitation of it in later years by men because of the power and control... the Bible story, is the most beautiful ever told in my opinion.... but I don't like what was done with that beauty...... it became corrupted!
