i ve got back to 1749 on my dads side .....

yea i know lol ...

my shock....finding that the family legend of grandad's auntie nellie was a load of tosh. Nellie was believed to have had an illegitimate daughter, dumped it on the sister to raise and then left for London never to be seen or heard of again. Truth is, she married, had one legitimate child and was then found dead in a canal after being missing for 10 days! Child raised by sister, husband never heard of again! Death certificate....Jury decided she drowned and all injuries were caused after death (probably by passing boats!!). Me, ever the sceptic lol, thinks hubby may have bumped her off lol.

I'm back to 1710 on some of my maternal lines. Even though my ex husband and I split in 1981, I'm still tracing his tree for my kids, he has Thomas Rogers from the Mayflower, Thomas Hyde (Hyde park) and his is back to King Alfred the Great.
We're all posh in spots.

Doing this has proved we are all distant cousins anyway.

You do share that bit of my tree but you might not be able to find the link back to that part. Everyone of European ancestry is very probably descended from Charlemagne.

I have got back to 1680s with a couple of lines, 1750s to others, some are full stop

But tonight i got in touch with acousin in the US and she said she knows why i have got no farther on our grandads tree, but she wont say on msn!! Intrigue!!

Ooh Mary.......if you can get back to Alfred the Great I think there may a line back from him to Charlemagne.

That'll give your kids the longest likely descent that's recorded.

I'll just go and check my medieval stuff and let you know.

Can't see an obvious Charlemagne line back but Alfred has ancestors for a number of generations further back Mary.

Put Alfred the Great into the search then go to ancestors and do an 8 generation search on ahnentafel.

It then goes another 5 generations back beyond that.

If you have found a Sir who was alive in 1535 then you may just be able to get further back.

To do that you could perhaps look at the Heralds Visitations (some are online and others in Records Offices). These were details of families.

They are not always accurate but it's a start. Then there are land records, wills and all sorts of documents.

A knight in the 16th century is likely to have been a son of another knight or of a nobleman. What is your ancestor's full name and what do you know about him? I will have a look through the medieval sites I trust.
