If you are travelling today or tomorrow check with your rail company or airline and keep an eye on Met Office warnings - stay safe where ever you are.

http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/warnings/#?tab=map&map=Warnings&zoom=5&lon=-3.50&lat=55.50&fcTime=1387670400http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/warnings/#?tab=map&map=Warnings&zoom=5&lon=-3.50&lat=55.50&fcTime=1387670400

Batten down the hatches - severe gales are forecast for most of the UK this Monday & Tuesday :-(

A very deep area of low pressure will bring very strong winds and heavy rain to much of the UK from Monday morning, through to late Tuesday morning. There is the potential for widespread gales with gusts of 70 mph for much of Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, southern and northwest England. Gusts of 80-90 mph are possible, with the greatest likelihood of these values across west Scotland.

The public should be aware of the potential for significant disruption to travel due to the very strong winds and also the risk of some flooding issues thanks to the heavy rain.

Ah, but Florence. There's a difference between your local area and much of the UK.

Things like trees and a high density of 2 + storey buildings ;-) :-D

Can you repost the link to the island webcam and weather station please? The thread it was on has got buried somewhere! :-D

Hi there Detective, yes i know we are so open up here, there is less to damage compared to the towns etc. I guess im a bit blase but shouldnt be really as the roof could easily come off or my car flip and disappear down a croft somewhere!

Now the link is here for those interested
http://www.europaidh.co.uk
menu will appear on left hand side, just click on weather and you will see the wind speeds.
Today earlier on the highest gust was 77mph and then we had a lull. But in the last wee while it has blown up again and around 50 at the minute, but hey thats not too bad!

Take care and nite nite

If you are planning on travelling on Monday or Tuesday by air, sea, bus, or train keep an eye on what your service provider puts on their website, if you are planning on driving be prepared for any event and keep any eye on the weather forecasts.

Last night down in my part of Kent near Orpington in South East London - was the first time this year I was kept awake by the noise of the wind and rain :-(

Florence61 Report 21 Dec 2013 15:26

OFITG, sorry was in the middle of typing when the electric went off. We had a gusty and rainy nite but in the morning it died down and the sun came out!!

We all went off to town xmas shopping and came back around 2pm.

But then suddenly the wind has got up again and so have made our curries and steak for tea already as i think we will lose power again!!

I used to live in Tunbridge wells 20 years ago and often went through orpington on the train up to london on day trips!! Had a good friend that lived in Sevenoaks or one oak as it became!!

Off to PO now to get lottery and the papers before hibernating inside for the weekend. Lovely coal fire on, nice and toasty.

Stay safe

Florence - I know Tunbridge Wells and Sevenoaks, I always made a point when down that way of popping into Tonbridge as there was a cafe their owned by an Italian family that made delicious ice cream :-)

Sevenoaks, or One Oak as it became :-D may well end up after tomorrow and Tuesday being No Oaks :-D

Stay warm and keep safe - I know from my time working on Iona how wild life on an island can be during times of inclement weather :-(

Florence61

Florence61 Report 22 Dec 2013 16:25

I think the cafe was called Dimaschios or something like that. yes many a coffee and ice cream had in there on a saturday when i was younger.

My MIl and Sil went to Iona a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it in the summer. I can imagine how bleak in winter it would have been, bad enough here sometimes.

I do have a thing about islands in uk and have been to many but still a few to do including iona one fine day and st, Kilda.!

Wind gusting badly just now. electric on and off so time for tea i think!

Stay safe

OneFootInTheGrave

OneFootInTheGrave Report 23 Dec 2013 14:15

The Queen Elizabeth II Bridge at the Dartford Crossing has been closed due to high winds. The closure is expected to remain in place until approximately 4am tomorrow.

This will be wreaking havoc for those who decided to go shopping at Lakeside or Bluewater shopping centres, only the two tunnels are open and they are operating one northbound and one southbound, so there will probably be tailbacks building up on both sides of the river :-(
