The 50p coin with a design of Kew Gardens on its face has been revealed as the rarest coin in circulation, with only 1 in every 300 people in the UK thought to have it in their change.

As a result, the commemorative coin is now being listed on eBay with a price of up to £120.

The Royal Mint unveiled the design in 2009 to celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the Royal Botanic Gardens.

But only 210,000 of the coins were released into circulation. This compares to 22.7million of the shield of the Royal Arms 50p design in 2008, and 7.5million of the Girlguiding 50p in 2010.

The Royal Mint is now encouraging people across the UK to check their change to see if have they have the "incredibly rare work of art" in their pockets.

Now that the coin has been announced as rare, it's expected to fast disappear as people hold on to it, hoping that its value will further increase.

In the words of Victor Meldrew - I don't believe it!! I remember looking at it carefully quite recently, and thinking to myself - oooh that's pretty, they've done one of Kew Gardens - before I spent it.
Obviously I didn't realise at the time that it was rare!!
Oh Rats!!

Good grief, £56?

There are over 30 on ebay at the moment. Last week you could have got one for £15 outright but word seems to have got around that they are in demand and this has pushed the price right up.

PS I have just seen that someone previously offering it for £15 outright has now increased the price to £100.....!

Had quite a few 50p's last week, now spent them, think that was one of them, remember thinking it was different. Wasn't meant to be mine :-(

There's one on there now for over £300 with about 3 hours left to bid. People must be kewing around the block for it ;-)

Mr Graham sir,
I think that may be the asking price that the seller wants and not a bid price.

Graham

Graham Report 21 Feb 2014 11:59

It says there are 49 bids ;-)

The really high prices are for uncirculated versions in mint condition. Circulated ones seem to be bidding around £70, but still a few hours left on those I just looked at so could easily top the ton.

Sorry I didn't buy one last week when they could be had for under a tenner.

I wish I had got one about 5 years ago for fifty pence
