Someone I know has a Kew Gardens 50p amongst their collection of special issues. They will be keeping it, although they didn't realise that it was commanding such a price. It was just one from pocket change and put by some time ago as 'different.'
There are quite a few special releases on certain coins.
This person collects £2 and 50p ones.

i usually only collect pre-decimal coins , but the exception is that i have also collected many 50p over the last few years so today i tipped them all out and i have lots of wonderful designs but alas none of Kew gardens.. :-( :-(

Prices seem to have settled at around £30-£40 although some with bids originally placed a few days back are going for more.

Still a lot of money for 50p coin.....!
