I must admit to being horrified to hear this news. Whatever happened to the fingers on lips or is that just too simple to expect in this day and age? I would not be at all happy if this was done to my granddaughter.

Well I got the strap regularly for being left handed.
And piano teacher would rap knuckles if you didn't play scales properly
How times have changed!
Could you ever imagine having a tantrum in a shop?..you'd have got at least a slap, yet you see it all the time when shopping these days.
Where has discipline gone?

IF the teacher actually taped the 30 children's mouths because she couldn't control them, then he/she needs to look for a new job, they obviously can't cope. Does anyone really think taping children's mouths is the correct way to treat anyone?

As for anyone hitting a child, why is it some adults think that hitting a child teaches it a lesson, do we hit adults? Not unless we want to be arrested we don't.

Going back to the "old days" where you were sent to the head for a beating, by cane, slipper or any other instrument, how could an adult beat a child, when they weren't even present when they did the wrong, you couldn't even say they did it on the heat of the moment, I'd call them sadists. My Mum was beaten by Nuns, my Uncle by Monks when they were at Catholic school in the 30's.

I'm really pleased that beating and abusing children is punishable by law now. Adults should keep there hands to themselves.

The main problem and what is missing these days is the respect children had for there own parents and the teachers, It starts at home

You will get zero discipline without respect, They go hand in hand

In the broader sense i believe respect has to be earned and not a given.

Just to clarify

by all means show respect to others unless they do something to loose it,

showing respect for others is not the same as having earned it amongst your peers

When i was at School we had a couple of teachers who didn't think twice about giving a clip round the ear if you spoke without being spoken too and if you made them realy angree you got a full on punch in the nose no messing, No point going home and telling my parents because they would have just given me another clip round the ear for getting into bother, Today they would be arrested for grievous bodily harm

We used to get the stick sometimes on the hand and sometimes on the backside

I don't think yesterdays teachers would survive in todays Schools and they probably wouldn't want too and who can blame them

Some points are very strong here

now I live next to a school and this school was so bad two years ago a super head was appointed!

We had children having sex in the field next to the school, teachers being assulted and the school being robbed and broken into and gear taken , fires set and light and so the list goes on ....and on!

This super head put in punishment and now the school has better grades than the best school in town

Some of this is bad behaviour is done by the children and supported by parents who think their kids do no wrong resulting in YOU the tax payer paying for new equipment for those who want to learn

Some punishment should be handed out if not when YOU ( those reading this) are old you will be mugged and no punishment will be given out!

AnnCardiff Report 5 Mar 2014 00:30

disgraceful behaviour by the teacher

however, I agree there seems to be no respect for any figures in authority these days and this stems from upbringing at home

I used to get the cane in school - for talking usually - boys and girls were treated the same

Has anyone considered that the teacher could have been at the end of their tether and may even have had some sort of breakdown?
It is extremely difficult to enforce discipline in schools at the moment and teachers' hands are so very tied.
How many of us have stood in a class of thirty shouting children and tried to teach?
It is not unusual for pupils to square up to teachers and worse and any PC punishments that are meted out are either worn as a badge or totally disregarded.

Everybody has to go to school but nobody is forced to go there as a teacher.

Exactly as I have written it.

eRRolSheep

eRRolSheep Report 5 Mar 2014 08:21

Well of course teachers are not forced to go in that, unlike as with children, it is not a legal requirement - but it is their job.

Porkie_Pie

Porkie_Pie Report 5 Mar 2014 08:23

Your correct Sharron, No teacher is forced to go to School but No teacher should have to cope with the fallout from children who's parents have failed to set boundaries for their offspring.

Children have no choice but to go to school, however much distress it ay cause them.

As for respect I don't think we actually did respect our teachers. We were afraid of them because they had the power to bully us and we had nowhere to turn for support so would enact the respect they felt was their right.

Of the scene with the bully with a cane and the frightened little boy I have more respect for the boy.

Was a bit surprised to read today that this happened when the children were playing Blind Mans Bluff.

Maybe Sellataping childrens mouths is the norm in the rest of Europe.

eRRolSheep

eRRolSheep Report 5 Mar 2014 08:42

Of course they have to go to school!

It is a legal requirement and should be the case anyway.

I went to a very good school and it was rather strict but I still had respect not just for teaching staff but for other people and adults in general.

Teachers face a nigh on impossible task these days and it is THEY who are subjected to violence and utter abuse on a daily basis.

Does anyone really think that any child who doesn't get discipline at home, will benefit from getting a good hiding at school?

Teachers are not allowed to touch children, therefore putting tape round there mouths isn't an option, they aren't allowed to do it, they know that, so if they feel the need, they need to get a new job, perhaps where they can work with adults that will let them do such things.

Having worked with, and had children with extreme disruptive behaviour live with us through fostering, even when I've been in severe situations because of bad behaviour, I've never felt the need to tape anyone's mouth, beat them or abuse them in any way, there are other ways to gain respect, I went down that route.
