:-D :-D :-D Sharron

What I find interesting, is that Billy loved visiting India - before he even knew!
There was a thread on Genes a while back about walking in the footsteps of your ancestors.
I've found, looking back, that on many an occasion, before I knew where my ancestors lived, that I've ended up living a few miles from where they lived, and on a few occasions - in the exact village where they lived :-S

Dear All

Hello

I managed to watch this evenings show.

Billy Connolly was so interested and captivated when he learnt of his ancestry.

It was refreshing to see someone who was genuinely intrigued by family history research.

Take gentle care
Best wishes
Elizabeth,
xx

I really enjoyed the programme and Billy's reactions but it's obvious that he isn't a well man, isn't it?

I enjoyed the show, although Billy isn't (and did look) very well, I was so pleased that he was well enough to travel to and around India to take part in the research.

He was captivated by the story of his "Irish" ancestors and came away a ricer man in knowledge both of his own family history and the history of "British India"

As he said "we didn't learn that in History back home"

A lesson for us all - (or at least those of us educated in the UK).

I wonder if he went on to research his family in India - all those cousins and aunties and uncles?

I enjoyed the programme, and watching Billy's reactions on learning of his ancestors' colourful history.

A good programme and was so pleased that Billy
enjoyed it finding out about his ancestors.
Wish I could find out about my Indian ancestors.

Snap Emma - thoroughly enjoyed the programme and overwhelmed by the amount of paperwork found in India.

Really enjoyed this one

I loved hearing about the Indian history – A most fascinating time and I too wished i could have seen India at the time of the Raj - it was so interesting i didn’t want it to stop.

I would love to find out more about his interesting family and what happened to them.

It was good they showed how long it can take to trawl through old records – rather than have someone sit there & produce the record for you.

I thought the lady at the hospital going through the medical records was so lovely.

Perhaps WDYTYA should take note and produce more in the next series that were like the last few celebrities shows.

Last one in the series tonight is Twiggy and
she looks into her mother's side of the family.

This one is really irritating me!

It seems they are milking it for all they are worth tonight.

I have to say I'm very disappointed with tonight's episode.

Apart from 'learning' about hard labour in prisons, what else did Twiggy really find out about her ancestors? not a lot...their names :-S ...sorry Leslie but my family tree is far more interesting :-D

'Emma'

'Emma' Report 9 Oct 2014 22:30

Feel she would have been better suited to the
programme on people's family who ended up
in the poorhouse.

I thought it was very interesting. Normaly i wander off and do something else. Her family show what hard times was really about.

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 9 Oct 2014 23:41

It certainly showed the hard times experienced by the poor - but they were hardly 'hardened criminals'.

My gg uncle was in Aylesbury jail in 1851. I thought the poor lad had been caught poaching.
No, he'd tried to derail a train!!

This was the same year his elder (and more sensible) brother, my gg grandfather moved to London to become a Metropolitan Policeman.
