OneFootInTheGrave Report 9 Sep 2014 12:39

David Cameron and Ed Miliband have agreed to cancel their weekly Prime Minister's Questions clash in the Commons tomorrow to travel to Scotland.

Instead, both leaders, and Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg, will head north to to tell the Scottish people "We want you to stay."

Well, all I can say is, if the Yes Campaign need a boost, these three comedians - dashing up to Scotland will certainly provide that :-D :-D :-D

Guinevere Report 9 Sep 2014 12:41

I thought Cameron had been told to stay away by the Scottish Tories because he's loathed north of the border.

And south of it, come to think about it.

funny sort of a referendum where a treaty of union agreed by both countries can now be abrogated by one. I wonder which way the English would vote given a chance? After all they have plenty of experience living under Scots PMs, finance ministers etc not to forget the Stuarts.

'Emma' Report 9 Sep 2014 14:19

So you hoping for a yes vote from Scotland Rollo?

RolloTheRed

RolloTheRed Report 9 Sep 2014 14:31

I am hoping for a no vote ggf Scottish, rellies in Dundee. Cannot see how a failed state next door would be good for England. So what if the Scots don't like Cameron policians come and go exiting the Union has no road back.

Can we vote for an independent Sussex next please? ;-)

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 9 Sep 2014 14:44

Not sure about an independent Sussex, but how about a bit of devolution for England?

After all, all the other countries of the United Kingdom have it, so why not us??????

'Emma'

'Emma' Report 9 Sep 2014 14:50

I'm with you on that Rollo, please God it's a no vote.

Most Scottish MP's I believe are labour members so England
could well be left with very little choice come election time.
I agree with you could never understand what Scottish MP's vote
has to do with decisions that affect England.

Emma

Edit...incase you don't know I'm Scottish living in Scotland :-)

As I see it, the voters in Scotland have been bombarded with reasons as to why Scotland should remain part of the United Kingdom, main arguments being that if Scotland votes for independence, the people of Scotland will be worse of as a separate Nation.

From the contact I have had with my family and many friends up in Scotland, I think the No Campaign has come across to many in Scotland as being very negative, lots of you can't do this and you can't do that approach, instead of a more positive approach about what Scotland and it's people can achieve by remaining as part of the UK.

The No Campaign seems to be portraying Scotland and it's people, as not being competent enough to run their own affairs, and by conveying that impression, many people in Scotland think that the promise to to give the Scottish Parliament more powers is nothing but a bribe to persuade them to vote No.

I also think that this dash by all three main parties leaders up to Scotland to make their case - could have unintended consequences for the No campaign.

I say this as a Scot, who was born in Fife, lived in Scotland for nearly 45 years, and one who supports the No Campaign!

OFITG we in my part of Aberdeen have been bombarded
with leaflets etc and a visit from the yes campaign.
We received one leaflet from the no campaign.

I remember months back a yes campaigner stating that anyone
who voted no was a traitor to Scotland.

Quite a few well known Scottish celebrities want a yes vote when
they don't even live in Scotland or pay taxes here and have been adding their
twopence worth to the yes campaign, they couldn't leave here quick enough.

Emma - my worry is that they say, if you tell a child not to do something, more time than not they will ignore you and go ahead and do it:-(

'Emma'

'Emma' Report 9 Sep 2014 16:17

Can't argue with that OFITG.

Andysmum

Andysmum Report 9 Sep 2014 16:52

Emma, I live in Scotland too and here (Argyll) we have been bombarded with as many NO leaflets as YES ones.

The reason the NO campaign seems negative is that it is assumed that a NO vote means that things will mostly stay the same.

On the other hand a YES vote will mean huge changes and the SNP are trying to persuade people that they will be better off under an independent Scotland.

DetEcTive, I have been saying for several years that England should have its own version of a separate parliament. I think Westminster should spend 2 days a week doing UK stuff and 3 doing just English stuff with only English MPs there.

I watched a TV programme a couple of weeks ago, when Andrew Neil said exactly the same thing. After all, why should Scottish/Welsh/Irish MPs make decisions that only affect England?

I think Scotland is quite capable of being a successful independent country - the question is, whether they SHOULD!

Mayfield

Mayfield Report 9 Sep 2014 17:33

Anyone remember the film The Mouse that Roared? ;-)

Denis

Denis Report 9 Sep 2014 18:18

Let's stick to facts. There are very few items of legislation in Parliament that apply only to England. The SNP has a policy of not voting on those bills that have no direct impact on Scotland.

if Scotland vote YES
does this mean all the MPs that are scotch decent
will defect back there or is that wishful thinking ;-) ;-)

'Emma'

Andysmum my fear is some will vote with their heart
and not their heart and head.
