I posted my resignation (with 1 month's notice) yesterday, by recorded delivery :-D

May seem weird to walk out of work, cross the road to the Post Office and post it, when, in theory, I could have handed it over.
Where I work, the higher paid do a lot of 'working' from home, and are rarely at work. They also have a habit of not looking in their post slings the few times they come in. Sending it by recorded delivery ensures an outside agency has details of when it was sent.

Best-case scenario for me, is that it isn't noticed for a month

A grievance letter I sent wasn't noticed for 3 weeks, at which time I put it in with some 'evidence' I needed for another meeting. The person to whom it was sent was 'too busy' to deal with it, so my line manager (the person the letter was about) dealt with it!!

First time I've ever left employment without a job to go to :-S

I don't intend signing on - couldn't for at least 6 weeks anyway. I got a bit of money when mum died, and have decided I may as well make the most of it. I don't really want to pop my clogs because of a crap job.

I've worked out that I can scrape by for 3 months. I intend getting better - work related stress has worn me down and made me physically ill - and trying for work with temp agencies in the new year.

The crunch came when I was at a 'back to work' interview about my being kept in hospital when I was sent for a scan to see if I had appendicitis. Line manager had written I 'stayed' in hospital - I wanted it changed to 'was kept in' hospital. She said - Well they didn't chain you down - you could have left! :-|
THEN she went on to say it would be 'merited' to see whether it was an 'acceptable' absence or not!

Letter is couched in a way that implies I may go for constructive dismissal :-D

Oh, and I'm due to have a biopsy on my tongue on Monday at 4pm.
She couldn't see why I wouldn't be at work on Tuesday :-0

Well done maggiewinchester, a decision that must have taken a lot of thought - more thought than your employers had for you.

Some employers, not all, display a very contemptuous attitude to their responsibilities as an employer. I held a senior position for 17 years with the company I used to work for. In 2010 as a result of the credit crunch the business got into difficulties because the bank, who were also in trouble, halved the company's credit facility.

The business was sold to a rival company, within 10 days of taking over the business, the new directors called me into the board room and told me they were making me redundant.

My notice period was 3 months and they wanted me to work it and show the guy who was taking over my duties the ropes. I told them, in words I cannot use on here, where to stick their job, they said if I walked out I would be dismissing myself and not be entitled to any redundancy payment or salary in lieu of my notice period.

I walked out of the boardroom - gathered up my belongings and walked out. Once I got home I got straight in touch with ACAS and within 4 weeks I received my full redundancy payment & 3 months salary in lieu of my notice period.

I don't think the problem is employers being inconsiderate but employers promoting ignorant bullies.

Thanks Fly - it's just a precaution. My dentist noticed a 'lesion' under my tongue and, in his own words 'It's either a sharp tooth or cancer'. Fortunately, despite the work related stress (overwork), I'm not a 'stressy' person. Dentist sent me to a maxio-facial specialist, who pointed out I had a lump the other side too - it was probably tonsil tissue. I've still got my tonsils - something the dentist didn't ask! However, she offered the biopsy 'just in case', as I smoke.
The next day - I got tonsillitis on the side of the 'lesion' the dentist noticed :-D

Agree Sharron, it's like a class system - the hierarchy (the majority of whom got dogs when told they could 'work' from home) have no idea what the admin do, and things 'they' don't want to do are shoved onto the admin. Our line manager didn't even 'lower' herself to sit with us, but was more than happy to tell us what we 'should' be doing. She had one course to do - we have 10+.

OFITG - the letter was written in a constructive dismissal claim way as I intend contacting ACAS, but as my stress hasn't led to depression, but physical problems, the latest ones in May & June - Arrhythmia and Gastritis, it may be difficult. However, to leave the managers wondering brings me a glow :-D

My doctor has told me on more than one occasion to leave the place.

I'm hoping he'll be sympathetic and sign me off for a couple of weeks, so I don't have to train anyone to do my job.

He pulled my tongue so hard, it hurt for over a week, and I couldn't move it properly.
It must be the ultimate 'pulling a muscle' :-(

Well done Maggie. I really can't understand how your line manager has got away6 with their attitude and/or your welfare people. I have worked for both local government and Civil service and welfare was always excellent as was HR. They were always wary of following proper procedure. Enjoy your work break and regain your health. :-)
