Just picked up a leaflet and besides batteries there is a long list of items not accepted. (similar to the list you can't take on aircraft. Besides things that are obvious like ammunition, you can't send nail varnish or polish or perfume, aftershave etc

Mobile phones, MP3 players and digital cameras are allowed in the post but the battery must be connected.

And just because a Customs Label states that certain items are in there, does not mean that is true.

Sadly far too many items are illegally sent through the post and not declared. Especially food and live animals.

Daughter went last week to post a large parcel to me she was told it would cost £38.00! Post mistress said go home and repack it into two parcels which then go as small packages and it will be much cheaper. I said take half of it out and send one small package!

I think you're right we all like buying prezzies that we hope the recipient will like but the postage makes this a difficult task. Hope you're both well Ann xx

A word of adviice. Some years ago when I was still working for Royal Mail, I spent 1 Christmas period working in a Package Office, where all the packages were sent in the afternoon for sorting (I was the manager)

Anyway, what shocked me was how badly many of the presents were wrapped.
We even had a couple that came through in Christmas wrapping paper and just a little bit of tape and an address label on, they had come apart and I had to re-wrap them. And they were going abroad!!!!
Another was obviously something either china or glass, how did we know, well it rattled. Whatever was inside had not been securely wrapped and was in pieces inside the packing.

We even had some with no address on, just a To and From label.

It was heartbreaking to deal with these.

So when sending anything through the post remeber to wrap it up carefully and securely. Using good tape and even old fashioned string. I know I do...

:-D

Wendy we are fine thank you. Hopefully your card will get to you and not end up in outer Mongolia (wherever that may be!)

Dazed.C. I am amazed that the post office where that parcel was posted from accepted it in that state. Ours are quite fussy but helpful as well. Another thing, I always post parcels and packets early to avoid getting caught up in the later rush.

we got our first Christmas cards by mail this morning ................ both from the UK :-)

The first email Christmas letter came in last week ............. from Australia, but they are going to be in Canada from early December to after New Year, so perhaps excusable!

I did get an interesting question from an English friend the other day ......................

and I do not know the answer!

She knows someone who needs to get an heirloom piece of jewelry (a ring) to an in-law in Canada .......... a last request from her now-dead husband.

The British Post Office told her that there was no point ............... it would not be accepted by the Canadian PO

I have no idea whether this was correct information ..........

........... but my gut feeling is that such an item should not be sent by mail

I'm saying this partly from experience .......

....... I sent my great niece in northern England a silver necklace with pendant (new, not an heirloom) in January this year. It has never arrived ................. but her momma didn't tell me that until June, so it's hopeless trying to track it. :-(

I wondered whether a courier company might not be a better suggestion for this lady in the UK?

AnninGLos - this was some years ago, when all you needed to do was get your package weighed and the gave you the stamps and then you put your parcel in a bag at the end of the counter, was quite normal in many larger offices around Christmas Time. Saved the driver having to drag the large parcel sacks through the security doors, to avoid crushing.

Would not happen today!

Oh well - I am sending a piece of equipment we no longer need with Christmas present to our relative who has just started keeping sheep in Scotland.

I will watch their faces with interest when I say the parcel contains a calendar,an apron and a castrator :-D

I ordered something from a company in Sydney on Wednesday afternoon.

It arrived yesterday, Thursday morning!

Less than 24 hours! We live in northern NSW, just south of the Qld border.

Usually letters take over a week, and parcels even longer, I am amazed!

Well done Australia Post :-D
