GlasgowLass Report 10 Dec 2014 16:22

Central Scotland.
The weather forecast did warn us to expect gale force winds but they would be worse further north.
We have been having extremely strong winds although there's no damage anywhere around here.

However, the weatherman didn't really mention that we should also expect heavy rain, hail, snow, sleet plus thunder and lighting... all at once

It's wild outside with some of the longest thunderclaps that I've ever heard in my life.
They rumble and bang for ages before dying down

I got a text from my daughter asking:
Was that really thunder, or has a plane crashed somewhere near?

think we're all weather watching - we're lucky down South so far - wonder about our Florence in the Hebrides - she probably can't post having lost power maybe

stay safe everyone

GlasgowLass

GlasgowLass Report 10 Dec 2014 16:34

17,000 homes in the Western Isles are without power at the moment.
I do hope Florence is OK

Our power keeps flickering with the lightning and Sky TV is breaking up quite badly.

Everything seems to calm down for about an hour or so but, the winds build up, the sky turns black and the pattern starts all over again.
This has been happening continually since yesterday morning

Sounds awful Glasgow lass I hope it starts to ease off for you soon.
We are in East Yorkshire and it is windy and just started raining heavily but nothing like the weather you have got.
Stay warm and safe.

Same here in Edinburgh. Very wet, strong winds, sleet and thunder. Started last night and sky tv has lost signal a couple of times but no power cuts here.

Well helllooo peeps, yes im ok and lovely of you all to be thinking of me.

Yep truly horrendous last night. Thunder and lightening like i have never heard in 20 years. We actually didnt lose power til 7am this morning. So thankfully what with no power and 80 mph winds, I did not venture out as all the schools were closed and certainly wasnt going to risk my life driving in the attrocious conditions. Power came back on at 10.30 stayed on a while then on and off and back on again. Wind slighty abated around tea time but just now is back up and now lights are flickering. Think its going off again.

Going off now because of lightening.#
Stocked up with candles and torches and lovely coal fire and we are all ok.

Stay safe everyone
Back sometime soon i hope.

Andysmum Report 10 Dec 2014 22:16

I am west of Glasgow on the edge of the Firth of Clyde. The weather is as described by GlasgowLass, with squally showers of horizontal rain/sleet/snow which only last a few minutes. Then it is dry, but the wind is still howling around, until the next shower etc. etc.

We have had one flash of lightning with an enormous clap of thunder right overhead. This has happened twice, several hours apart, and is most unusual.

I have just seen a forecast and it is going to continue for some time yet. So far we have had no power cuts, but no doubt we will at some point.

Keep safe Florence - the waves in the Denmark Strait (even further north than you) are apparantly "phenomenal". Not a word usually used by weather forecasters!

TAKE CARE FLORENCE

GlasgowLass Report 11 Dec 2014 13:37

Glad to hear your OK Florence as I was thinking about you.

Today is bit better but the wind still picks up every hour or so.
At this very moment, it's blowing a hoolie, the sky is dark with horizontal snow and hail

It's white outside but, in the time it has taken to type this, the wind has dropped and the sky is blue again

Florence61

Florence61 Report 11 Dec 2014 23:13

Well the wind has abated now but we still had really frightening thunder and lightening all day and early evening. The lightening struck a house 2 miles from here, blew out the tel lines and also the tvs! so no tv, no tel and sketchy mobile coverage but strangely today we have internet....quite amazing and yes power but had 2 short cuts today. One for 2 hours and one for 1/2 hour.

As the ferries hadnt sailed, there was no milk anywhere to be had. evry shop and supermarket..empty. hopefullly it sailed this afternoon and the shelves wil be restocked by tomorrow..well heres hoping.

Hope everyone is ok and not suffered any damage.

Think there is still more bad weather to come with snow for us at the weekend.

Take care everyone
Thankyou for thinking of me :-D <3 <3

We've also had horrible weather :-(

Torrential rain, strong winds, thunder & lightning...... and hailstones!

We're in the sub-tropics, so it's wet, warm & humid.

Florence61 Report 28 Dec 2014 21:29

Well we have had a calm week but having just seen the countryfile forecast for next week, it looks like battening down the hatches again. new years eve and next day look awful with 70mph+.

Anyway plenty of notice to get organised. Candles stocked up, coal and peat for the fire, lots of drink and nibbles for party by candlelight. Yep all sorted.....just hope the ferry sails so SIL and BIL make it home in time for midnight!

At least the thunder and lightening have gone away, the worst Ive seen in 20 years. Some houses still dont have a phone working!

Take care everyone

Well not 70mph but it is about 35 and quite breezy.

We have had 2 powercuts today so no doubt there will be a 3rd later on.

Hope those going out in the cities will be wrapped up well, torch in pocket and have plenty to eat before venturing out.

We are staying put this year and shall be entertaining ourselves and the teenagers.

Happy new year to everyone when it arrives and all the best for 2015.
