Joan, our lights are flickering too but we have just had our evening meal. So all fed and watered.

The snow showers here didnt amount to much, but the wind is strong again and I think the lights will go out.

Hope you don't get snowed in too bad.

No fix of casualty tonight as Tv still off!

Glad you are Ok Florence
It's snowing in Lanarkshire too, fairly heavy and horizontal at times but, the ground is too wet for it to lie.

Good to hear from you Florence :-)

Blowy here in Aberdeen and had a flurry of snow

We had a quiet night compared to the night before.
Stay safe everyone. :-)

Just to say, the wind is up again at storm here and it's starting to snow!!!!!

Have just finished clearing up the mess candles leave.Theres wax on the hearth and table, hard to clean.

I have an elctricity pole in my garden which has now moved again and is leaning around 4o degees thankfully towards the road. Its line is attached to 5 houses in this street. My worry is if it goes down..yes away from the houses it will lay across the front lawns and we wouldnt be able to get out with the car. We would have to climb a fence up the croft and go that way!

If I ring up they will say, it's not a priority...yet but think I will anyway just so they are aware.

As there is no mobile signal.if you want the emergency services, fire, police or ambulance you have to travel to the coastguard station which is 5 miles from here and they will assist.

Son says tv has gone off now too.

Oh my this was the weekend we didnt want!

At least my freezer contents have been saved...just.

Well off to do a bit more and refill the flask.

Chat soon folks

Glad you're OK Florence. I don't know about St Kilda, but last night's news said 140mph at Stornoway.

Today it is still very windy, although not quite as bad as yesterday, and so far, no sign of the promised snow. Surprisingly, we have no damage - at least, not as far as I can see!! The village was without power yesterday, but we seem to have been lucky, apart from our street lamps.

No ferry though and also no local trains, because the waves break over the track at hight tide!!

Well that was the storm that was!

Our power went off around 12.30 thursday eve and we only got it back at 2am this morning.

The wind was around 113mph and at st kilda 142 was recorded.

We never slept a wink and i thought the roof was going to blow..very scary indeed. Thankfully we had no damaged or lost roof slates but around us and all over the island there was a lot of damage.

Sheds reduced to matchsticks, whole sheds that completely disappeared and were found 1/2 mile away!

MIL's bins were in the sea and left a trail of broken glass everywhere and 2 wheels!

We had the open fire as normal and lived by candlelight but after a long while it's a strain and the rest of the house was freezing. No ferries, planes, buses etc so we were pretty cut off.

However now trying to catch up on washing etc as it's still blowing a gale and promises snow!

The problem now is poles that have been weakened are more likely to come down so i think more powercuts will follow.

Hats off to the engineers who worked tirelessly to get us reconnected and also risked their lives in the the wild weather.

Im glad everyone is ok and hope this storm isnt repeated too often. We are used to wild weather as you said Joan, but this storm was one of the worst ive experienced in over 20 years.

Going off to catch up and prepare food for later, just in case power goes again.

Take care everyone

We got very little sleep either.
I was so scared but with every cloud.......

Daughter No3 had a deadline for a Uni assignment and it was due in today.
She was extremely stressed and there were lots of tears!

She never went to bed on Wednesday night at all, but stayed awake to get as much done as possible.
Yesterday, afternoon, she received an email telling her that due to the impending weather wich would affect the trains, the assignment doesn't need to be handed in until Monday!

After a very noisy night when we didn't get much sleep, we got up early as OH has chosen this weekend to make his annual trip to the London Boat Show!!

According to the Scotrail website there are no trains anywhere in Scotland until later, when they have had time to check all the lines for safety. We had visions of having to drive into Glasgow, but stopped at the local station to see what was happening and timed it just right for OH to get the bus to Glasgow. :-) :-)

It takes longer than the train, but should get him there in time for his London connection.

Pause to take a phone call from OH sitting on the London train - he says he has never seen Central Station so deserted. He has the train almost to himself!!

I hope everyone else is OK. Florence is probably getting the worst battering - take care.

hello my friends.

Well its pretty quiet here too but jolly cold.

My fire is on and tea nearly ready.

Council saw sense at last and have closed all schools in the western isles tomroow and told pupils AND staff to stay at home .yippee, first time ever.

However we must all take extreme care and not venture out unless you have to. Life is so precious.

Wont be on anymore tonight and prbably will be without power!

So take care everyone and will be back soon...hopefully

I know what you mean Florence,
Do you recall the heavy snow in Nov 2010?
The snow started mid morning and by mid afternoon central Scotland came to a standstill.
It was a Monday.
My local council dragged their heels that day and the decision to close many departments came too late for some of my colleagues .
None of them lived locally and realised that they were now trapped in the workplace and had to spend the night there without food.
The following day they spent hours helping each other to dig their cars out of the snow and none of them got home until mid afternoon on the Tuesday
One of my friends was physically and emotionally exhausted but the employers refused to allow her the Wednesday off to recover.... go off sick or take a day in annual leave.
I have no contract but had already agreed work on the Wednesday.
It took a lot of organising but, I managed to get there.( 2 out of our 3 cars were stuck in snow drifts )
When I arrived at my workplace, I found it closed because none of the regular staff could get there to open up.

As a member of casual staff, I wasn't paid for that day

We are planning a "hurricane party" this weekend by candlelight!Got a couple of bottles left from xmas and a few beers.Down the lot and then sleep through it....well nice thought but we don't really drink!

I so hope the dept says to stay at home as the police always advise. Unfortunately, they have discovered a way around their policy which states when the school is closed due to adverse weather, staff are still expected to turn up to do other duties etc..

They have reworded the policy now to read" if you feel that it would be unsafe or your life will b endangered by travelling, then you should make a decision whether or not to travel. So the onus is on us. They can then decide whether to dock you a days pay for non attendence!

I think if they do take a days pay, my union will be following that through. if I tel in sick with a migraine, i would get paid and they couldn't prove otherwise.

We shall see tomorrow as the dept need to make a decison before schools close at 3pm on Thursday to let parents know.

ooo er I have just seen the countryfile forecast for the week ahead!!!

My goodness it looks bad on wed and thoroughy worse on Friday.

As we have had several days warning, we should be ok. Coal supply good, candle stock replenished and plenty of snacks that dont need cooking. I shall be making a pan of chicken soup tomorrow and a loaf in my breadmaker maybe 2 and freeze them.

A couple of weeks ago we had no bread or milk for 3 days. Couldnt get Dried Marvel as everyone else had the same idea but i found one in my baking cupboard.

Stay safe everyone who be affected and take care when driving.

On saturday up here, the glasgow plane was blown off the runway, 4 people injured but not seriously. The captain tried 3 times to take off but the cross winds blew the plane across onto the grass.
