OHs friend has just called in with a very big bag of onions. Has any one any tips for peeling them? I want to dice/slice bag up and freeze them. |

I put a cutting board on the hob (not with any burners on!!!) and turn on the extractor fan. Not perfect - but works well enough. |

If you chill the onion in the freezer and then use a very sharp knife it helps - you cry because when you usually cut an onion, you crush the enzymes. This releases a gas which combines with the water in your eye to form acid - hence the tears. Also, if at all possible avoid cutting off the shoot or the root as this can exacerbate the problem. |

Don't dry your eyes when they water. Just step outside for a moment and the watering will stop almost immediately. |

I've tried just about everything...... whistling, match between the teeth, not cutting off the onion root, keeping the onions in the fridge first............ I wear glasses, and that seems to make it worse, because my glasses fog up. |
