Andysmum

Andysmum Report 4 Feb 2015 15:21

Different methods suit different people. I tried cutting down but it was hopeless. :-( :-(

I found that I was constantly clock-watching and the gaps were getting shorter!! By going "cold turkey" I had no cigarettes in the house, so I couldn't smoke.

Good luck to everyone who is trying to give up. :-) :-)

Wisechild I haven´t seen our bill yet so that just might be a good boot up the backside reason to say out ya go snouts (my Dad´s name for them). Mind it´s also a good reason to say to OH´s boss - time for a pay rise.Although after 7yrs it really is time for one anyway !!!!!!!

Andysmum I will have to go cold turkey although I can cut down it never lasts.

Mind I was happily cutting down with view to making my 4 days last 6 or 7 and also in respect for OH who has already run out of cigars, when I discovered OH is happily helping me also by filching my smokes :-S. My cutting back is better than his sneaking as I still have approx 3/4 days left.
It´s the ones I rely on ie my morning coffee one etc that I am trying to cut back on :-0 as they are the ones that I will miss most.

AnninGlos Report 4 Feb 2015 17:21

Uzzi can you read while drinking your coffee? Maybe having something in the opposite hand to your cup will help you looking for a ciggie.

UzziAndHerDogs

UzziAndHerDogs Report 5 Feb 2015 06:32

Ann I normally read the news on line with my morning coffee, or I prop my kindle up. When my cigarettes run out I am going to buy a load of celery :-0 Now I am not partial to celery but can only hope sucking on it will break the habit :-D

3 days left of smokes !

UzziAndHerDogs

UzziAndHerDogs Report 6 Feb 2015 18:01

With help from OH I have just opened my last from one pack. I have 39 fags left. In many ways I wish I had just decided that was it buy no more once I had run out. This gave me the chance to cut down and to say I am packing up to you all. After all there is nothing better than an audience, yes I could lie and type with a ciggie in hand but could I lie in June !!!! I have Joy and Stray there :-D :-D

So 38 smokes to go :-D

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 6 Feb 2015 20:03

Could you lie in April?

UzziAndHerDogs

UzziAndHerDogs Report 7 Feb 2015 09:15

Ahhh Ann good point :-D No I couldn´t lie in April either when you will be here to check on me.

30 ciggies to go and OH pinched 2 :-0. So we should be smoke free by Monday ! :-D

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 7 Feb 2015 10:01

I shall be sniffing as I go past :-D :-D

wisechild

wisechild Report 7 Feb 2015 11:32

If it´s any encouragement Uzzie, I have been restricting myself to 5 a day for the past 5 weeks & have just banked €100.
Just hope it lasts. (the smoking that is, not the money!)

UzziAndHerDogs

UzziAndHerDogs Report 8 Feb 2015 13:00

:-D Ann I shall have my head out of the window as we used to do in school ! :-0

Wisechild sadly I won´t see the money (in cash) that I save but OH will be grateful :-D :-D. Mind it will mean more meals out in the summer ;-) :-D I will be saving him more than €120 a month and his cigars are more expensive so 1 extra meal out a month sounds a fair exchange to me.

UzziAndHerDogs Report 12 Feb 2015 16:41

Well I went into Monday morning with 4 ciggies left and this morning smoked my last one. So my 4 or 5 days lasted a lot longer. I didn´t have a problem not smoking for the rest of the day when I had some left but today after smoking my last one I have been very aware of not having any :-( .
Tomorrow morning will be my test :-P

Good luck for tomorrow.

I gave up 24 years ago, never thought I could. :-)

Island Report 12 Feb 2015 16:47

Uzzi, in 3 days your sense of smell will return big time and you will spend the money you saved on cleaning ;-)

Good luck, you can do it - just keep busy.

LaGooner

LaGooner Report 12 Feb 2015 16:49

The very best of luck Uzzi. I gave up smoking 50 a day habit 14 years ago and never looked back. Youngest son gave up 2 days ago so you are not alone :-D

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 12 Feb 2015 17:33

T said the first thing he noticed was how his sense of taste returned and he enjoyed his food more. I am sure that you will do it. You may be resorting to walking the dogs more at first :-D

Mayfield

Mayfield Report 12 Feb 2015 18:03

I gave up smoking almost 60 years ago, pestered my dad to try his pipe when I was about 7 or so, boy did I turn green! Never touched the stuff again!

Well done Dad! :-D

UzziAndHerDogs

UzziAndHerDogs Report 12 Feb 2015 18:30

Emma thank you

Island cheers for that :-D I have already tagged jobs to do just to stop me from wanting to smoke. So it seems like a full spring clean is about to happen :-D :-D

Ann I could do without enjoying food more but dog walking will be good for all 3 of us.

:-D@Mayfield knowing me if Dad had smoked a pipe then so would I :-0

LaGooner I am impressed as 14yrs ago the pressure to quit wasn´t as strong as now. Good Luck to your son

Giving up smoking is just about possible but very hard. For some cold turkey works for others tapering off. The craving never quite goes away especially if you are very stressed.

After failing three serious attempts ( at a time when I smoked > 40/day ) a friend said to substitute something else ... so I always had a tube of toffees with choc centres and a Rubic cube to rotate. It worked! I put on weight though :-(

I think it is easier to give up smoking now than 30 years ago 'cos the ciggies are hidden away at shops etc, far fewer people smoke anyway and there is nothing like the same social pressure to smoke. Joining the miserable crowd out in the rain littering the pavements is not very attractive.

Also it costs a fortune. For a year or so I put the smoking money in a tin. It financed quite a decent holiday.

good luck

Island Report 13 Feb 2015 11:22

It isn't hard to stop if it's what you really want. I chucked out all the trappings of smoking and slapped on a NRT patch for a month ten years ago and never looked back.

I went through a very stressful time a few years after stopping and never once thought of cigarettes.

Everyone one is different.
