In particular trousers and jeans. Years back I could walk into M&S and pick up a pair of jeans or trousers medium (or whatever they called the equivalent length then) and they would fit perfectly, no need to try them on.

Nowadays (I am the same height I was, 5ft2.5inches) I find that the medium length is anything from one and a half inches to three inches too long, and the short length are one and a half to two inches too short.

Not really important in the scheme of things but aggravating. There is a huge difference between the medium and short lengths but there didn't use to be.

There's also a huge difference in the actual size too - and this is true across many shops - and it drives me mad :-D

At a size 20 I'm a big girl but I am only 5' 3" with a 27" inside leg and so need short jeans. However M&S don't do short jeans above a size 18. :-( I agree though there is a huge difference in actual size.

I have bought 3 pairs of jeans and jean style trousers in the past 2 weeks (well there was a sale on). One pair of Indigo jeans and one pair of Classic style trousers are one and a half inches too long, one pair of Classic jeans style trousers are exactly the right length (i.e. one and a half inches shorter than the other two.)

Sheila yes everything needs trying on these days, such a time waster, and a nuisance in the winter when wearing so many clothes. Oh and don't start me off on shoes!! :-D

I've noticed they can be a big difference in sizing
even in the same shops
Don't they use a tape measure anymore

I think it all went haywire when they started having things made abroad.

I do to Ann
everybody skimping on materials doesn't help either
I myself would rather pay that bit extra for clothes that actually fit better :-D :-D

I usually buy from Fashion World and know my size there.

I recently bought some jeans on line from Evans. I ordered one size smaller than I usually wear and they were still two sizes too large.

As for being 5' 2" with a 27" inside leg, well, I am nigh on 5' 8" with a 27" inside leg. I used to work with a woman who was 4' 11" with the same inside leg as me.

I am the world's biggest dwarf!

I haven't bought much in M&S recently but tried on a pair of jeans some time ago - the fit was fine but they were flapping round my feet and miles too long. No problem, just pick up the shorter length - got them home and they were virtually half-mast. OH never has a problem - if it says 32" long, it IS 32" long. Why is it so difficult?

Knickers.

I've had some for years............they still fit.

I now have to buy knickers TWO sizes larger!!

I've put on some weight, but not THAT much!

:-(

Maybe the elastic has gone in the old ones ;-)

DH can buy a pair of jeans no problem...... he doesn't understand why I have to go from shop to shop to get a pair that FIT, without being "bum-crack" ones..... I hate them!!!!!!! Why don't clothing manufacturers realise we're not all 18 and weigh 50Kg!??

maggiewinchester Report 27 Mar 2015 10:32

I bought 2 pairs of cords in there, same style, same size, different colour.
One pair fitted perfectly, the other pair were too tight around the waist :-|

Many years ago I used to be a machinist we got paid basic wages and a bonus over the top ... you used to make any size if you were short of the target so they used to be a mixed size lot ;-) ;-) ;-) I usually buy from B/M and size xl always fitted perfectly, now the sizes have changed, and xl is now 24/26 making them too big whilst 22/24 are too tight.... :-S :-S :-S my biggest problem is too long in the arms, I used to shorten them , but now cant manage to use my machine. why do they fix things that aint broke

Medium M & S trousers were always the right length for me - now even short are too long - ridiculous!!!

Sue Report 27 Mar 2015 11:44

M & S, agree sizing is luck of the draw, also materials are weird and do not hang very well. And as for style .......

Definitely not the shop it once was, sadly.

My youngest has a birthday this week and wanted a particular dress that is hand made to order.
I took her exact measurements and ordered the dress.

It came yesterday ( from Greece) and... it fits perfectly.
She requested it to be slightly longer than this pic... and they did that too !

These days I have to try on everything I buy from M & S - even if I buy two things that are meant to be the same.

I think they used to have everything made in England but these days even the same style of something can be made in two or three different countries.

I agree. I used to be able to nip into M & S, pick up whatever I wanted and know that it would fit! Not any more, apart from briefs. After a gap of not making them, they started stocking the cotton, aertexy-like briefs again. They are the only make that come up to the waist properly (and not to where they think your waist is!!), and don't cut into the top of my legs.

As for sleeve lengths - I usually have to cut off several inches, particularly on Unisex clothes. Why do designers think that if you put on weight your arms will grow longer? :-S :-S :-S

The only place I can guarantee I get jeans/trousers that are long enough are from Long Tall Sally :-(

I am not a fan of 'ankle swingers'. I'm 5' 8" but need 34" inside leg! On the odd occasion I wear heels they are 36". That's why if I want cheap jeans I opt for mens ;-)

Glasgowlass I love that dress but I definitely think you have to be young to carry it off......Knock about 40 years of my age and I would be really tempted :-D

As for M&S I always bought short length in trousers with no problem but like others I have noticed that they are now too short and the regular still far, far too long :-(
