Should GenesReunited be laid to rest? It seems so dead on these boards lately. I renew my subscription every year only because it is reasonably cheap and I like to help on the boards if I can and it passes away a bit of time each day.

These days there is very little to do. I never used to come onto the General Chat board but these days the other boards have very few posts so I find myself reading the threads on here.

If I was a new member I don't think I would renew for a second year. Not sure what I'll do at renewal time this year.

like you, I love digging around the records, but compared with a few years back, there seems little to do and so I spend most of my time - well not a lot of it - on Chat. I'd miss my friends on here if I left and as I live on my own I find it a comfort

I agree Kath, I keep renewing for the same reasons as you, reasonably priced membership and helping others with their research. I keep looking for somewhere else where people need help.

When I first became a member about 12 years ago there was always something going on and all the boards kept moving.

I agree with both of you. It used to be so busy and I could easily spend the whole day on here (and often did). All the boards moved at a very fast pace.

My son keeps telling me to just renew as I'd miss coming on here - but although Genes is reasonably priced you also need a subscription to one of the other sites (I have Findmypast) and that is more expensive for the amount I now use it.

I'm sure I'll probably end up renewing again but it seems such a waste these days.

GR is a family history site and not a chat board - you have faceache et al to tell the world at large what you had for breakfast, what time you "went to bobos", what your little dog is wearing today etc etc

you don't have to say anything of the kind if you don't want to

There are some excellent genealogy groups on Facebook for people to get help in their family history research for free. Many members have multiple subscriptions to other sites and are very willing to use them in helping others.

Strange! I could have sworn there was a "Chat board" on GR too.

Are GR doing anything at WDYTYA this week?

Graham

Graham Report 16 Apr 2015 15:51

Which of the following is a review for GR?

1. It "has, for many years, been at the forefront of the internet genealogy market, providing a comprehensive and excellent quality service for its users. It has been relied upon by millions of people and is appropriate for both beginner and expert family tree or family history enthusiast."

2. It "is a relatively new service that offers family history and genealogy enthusiasts access to some of the most developed and advanced tools available in the online genealogy market."

3. "With millions of members and family names, along with the ability to share photos and chat with other members, it is a bit like the Facebook of genealogy. In the busy world we live in, it's easy for even the closest of families to lose touch with one another."

4. It "is a UK based site, offering access to a range of research records specifically from UK sources...This may be a little disappointing for some as it limits the search opportunities of UK users to only family members who appear on British record."

5. It "is a real up-and-coming player in the world of online genealogy."

These are all genuine reviews for 5 different sites.

I don't use Facebook Joeva - think too many people put far too much information on there.

Have tried other genealogy sites but have never got away with any of them - I think it's just me because Genes was the first website I ever used and I'm one of those people who doesn't like change.

I think it is probably number 3 Graham. They are always saying they have millions of members. If they have then not many of them use the community boards.
