Our two miniature Shetland ponies have kept really well over the years..

However, the last three days our chestnut lad has the colic. He's about 20 years, we've had him since a foal.

The vet has visited three times with his painkiller jabs. He had barely had a mouthful of anything the last few days and has lost much condition. He's normally a typical well-rounded boy.

This morning the decision was made to give him until tomorrow. The vet said he hasn't a twisted gut but more a blockage. The jab has picked him up and under instruction we've turned him into the field. We were surprised he's been grazing and even drunk water from a bucket.

Keeping everything crossed that the grass will push it's way through and a miracle will happen. It's good to see him enjoying the afternoon somewhat, but hoping it's not his last supper.

Had a good cry but still hoping.

Thank you so much. I can't believe he's so poorly looking at him now.

We are going to ask for another painkiller tomorrow and give him a bit longer unless it's obvious tomorrow that he won't make it.

It is possible for a pony to visit an equine centre and be sedated and tube fed but it's a very costly procedure. I'm not putting him through all that, he's only used to being on the farm. It's a tough decision, but fortunately he doesn't belong to a child so we don't have that to add to the equation.

Hoping it won't happen and then we won't be left with his little friend, it would mean either finding a home for him or getting another little one. Don't want to be thinking about that yet whilst he's still out there enjoying the grass. <3

Come on Conker!

Our daughter was just expressing the same thoughts, Shirley. You would have thought they could have some sort of drench to get things moving.

We've let him enjoy a quiet time on the paddock before moving him inside and making him comfy on his rubber mat. We only have shavings so have made a good bed of hay for him. He's not looking so good again as the painkiller wears off, and still no poop!

If we think he's in distress will call the vet again this evening. It's not looking good unless the grass does the trick later. Upsetting for our daughter, too.

Her first pony was a disaster. He arrived on her 9th Christmas, there is a cine film somewhere as he entered the french doors into the lounge, she flew through the air exclaiming, 'is it for me'! After her first ride on Christmas afternoon, I fell whilst holding him, that was the time my leg broke and my bone tumour was discovered. After seeing her Mummy so poorly all thoughts of riding were gone forever!

A few years later we decided to get our first miniature Shetland, this wee boy Conker, quickly followed by his lifetime friend. He's brown and white, more like a miniature horse with his slight build. They've lived only 12 foot from our lounge window all these years.

Still waiting to see if he might turn the corner <3

Hello :-)

He is still with us, thank you.

The vet came first thing and has given him yet another painkiller. I think there's something in there to help with the spasm. He's too tiny to bring anything down his rear end but he could feel it there.

Different vet today and he's given him liquid paraffin mixed with water in a syringe. We've a large container to carry on doing it through the day, just in the hope it still might shift things. I'm not sure whether to be hopeful or not but it's giving him every chance. He's having another painkiller later today so that he has a comfortable night.

Many thanks for the kind words <3
