I must admit

I wouldn't mind seeing Sean Bean in all his glory :-D :-D

I may have to steam that later :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D

I remember the trial and all the hype . How it was full of four-letter words etc etc. At the time I didn't know what most of them meant!!

After the trial people were all buying the book and complaining about the lack of four-letter words. The papers were saying which page to look at :-) :-)

I quite enjoyed it, and thought the trial was a huge fuss about nothing!

I remember the version with Sean Bean and Joely Richardson. It was a bit more risque than this new version, and they made a very handsome couple :-D :-D

I am a D H Lawrence fan, and Women in Live is one of my favourite films :-D

Talked about this today where I volunteer and someone mentioned Sean Bean. I did not see that version but Sean Bean :-D :-D :-D

It was televised in 1993 with Sean Bean - I did watch some of that but am not keen on DH Lawrence :-(

But I am quite keen on Sean :-D

I actually enjoyed it! For once it was good to be able to enjoy the story instead of concentating on the mucky bits :-D ;-)

I though it was beautiful, and sensitively portrayed. :-D

AnnCardiff Report 7 Sep 2015 15:04

yep - I was looking for bodice ripping and rampant sex accompanied by a few Anglo-Saxon verbs :-D

JoyBoroAngel

JoyBoroAngel Report 7 Sep 2015 14:50

I thought it was going to rampant and raw ;-) ;-)

I was a trifle disappointed :-D :-D

I thought like you, AnnC, it did not live up to its hype. In fact, I thought one of the main characters acted so badly he needs to give up and get a new day job. The clue is 'He' - and it was not JN. Never mind, he may be more suited to comedy than drama.

What a shame when something is not up to spec.

I can remember someone bringing the banned book (her dad's copy) into school before 1960 and we all thumbed through it secretly.

Mayfield

Mayfield Report 7 Sep 2015 11:44

Over rated book, it was "bigged up" by critics in order to boost it's chance of beating the Obscene publications act, in the interest of freeing up publication laws.

A bit like Kama Sutra which while interesting to read, is not the ultimate sex manual it is cracked up to be! :-D

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 7 Sep 2015 10:22

didn't live up to all the hype - was definitely not earthy or steamy enough - nothing like the book :-(

Agree with Lyndi and AnninGlos. I remember reading it in the mid-50s and I didn't think it would translate well to the screen.

Do you remember the 1960 obscenity trial (showing my age now)? One of the men, a judge or prosecutor, caused an uproar by saying something on the lines of "Is this the sort of book you would want your wife or servants to read?" He still appeared to be living in 1860!

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 7 Sep 2015 07:49

I am with Lyndi. Although I think I read it before 1960, in those days it was a real shock to the system. I chose not to watch it this time.

Lyndi

Lyndi Report 6 Sep 2015 23:09

I didn't watch. Decided to stick with the memories of reading (parts of ;-) ) the book under the desk in the chemistry lab at high school in 1960 ;-) Don't remember who had brought the book in, but most of us had read some of it by the end of the day lol.
