I think its good we all have different view
Think how boring the world would be if we were all the same :-D :-D

I think it only fair to say that many people went to the trouble of stating not only why they think as they do but also to post links to sites that gave facts that they based those opinions on and it is a shame when people are denied the chance to read that.

There are always two sides ( usually a lot more ) it helps to be able to read both, if only to cement your own convictions...nothing I read changed mine, but I had learned a lot more than I knew at the start of the thread.

Well I usually hold back from joining in debates and discussion threads because people who are so much more able to express themselves than I am make me feel somewhat inadequate. It was good to see so many of us adding to the thread without the worry of being 'put down'. We have all had different upbringing and education, are all different ages, all live in different areas and therefore all have different views and fears. sometimes in this sort of discussion if we are receptive to the ways others think and then opposing views are put, minds can be changed, attitudes altered. That is why these debates and discussions are valuable. But not if they are stifled before finished.

My opinion didn't change one iota but I gained an insight into why others think as they do, which is valuable.

unfortunately Guinevere I doubt that anyone else's views changed either

refusing to consider facts that contradict one's views is really the very definition of 'prejudice' ... prejudging ...

the general sentiment of 'that's my opinion and I'm entitled to it' is the zeitgeist of our times :-)

Ah - it may not have changed her mind, but Guinevere also said she gained an insight into why others think as they do, and found it valuable! :-D
Understanding why someone acts the way they do, or says what they do is a dying art!

I'm aware of the animal culling controversy but I'm sorry to see the same activity is occasionally utilised here to wipe out a whole thread.

Issue a challenge to those who doubt the value of the freedom of expressing a valid opinion.

I know nothing much about the culling controversy but I am not much surprised that GR pulled Ann's Thread.

I can remember writing on it that latterly there had been some harsh comments.

One particular view had people foaming at the mouth so to speak. If my memory serves me right, comments were made to the effect that nobody on the Thread knew much about the situation, someone was told to get a grip, others quoted (lengthily in some instances) from any source they could get their hands on in order to justify their thinking.

I don't know if worse comments were made after I left the Thread but I do remember thinking that it was a shame that toleration seemed to be in short supply.

All the same, it would be interesting to know why the Thread was pulled.

My contribution is letter from the Bishop of Warrington which was read out in local Anglican churches on Sunday. No doubt many diocesan bishops have done the same thing across the country. (yeah yeah, it's me, the 'churchy' one!) :-D

This is not posted to cause a religious debate or upset of any sort.


"We have all been horrified, shocked and troubled witnessing the appalling human crisis that is happening across Europe. As the refugee crisis has grown and magnified many of us can be overwhelmed by a sense of helplessness and a seeming inability to put our empathy to good use.

But we must respond. We are called to respond. Jesus says 'love your neighbour' and this wave of humanity which comes knocking at our door to seek refuge are our neighbours. We should hear their knock and open the door.

I know that this is a complex area and we have no easy solutions but this weekend, in your parishes and church communities I urge you to look at how you can respond.
It may be by offering extra food and supplies to your local Foodbank. Many of our Foodbanks are the first port of call for the hungry dispossessed who are entering our region. You may want to talk to your local Foodbank about what are the extra needs that these refugees need.

It may be donating supplies, and equipment to the churches and charities who are trying to bring relief to those fleeing persecution. Could you donate supplies that are needed for the camps around Calais? Or maybe offer something to the many agencies that are working in the war torn and crisis areas of the middle east or the places around the Mediterranean where the refugees first land on our continent. It does not take too much time to find out who to support.

It may be by welcoming, befriending and supporting the stranger in your community. Many more refugees are being brought into our area, what as a church can we do to support them?

It may be by putting pressure on the politicians. We as a church see the need, we hear the stories, we feel the injustice. We can only be part of a wider solution. The politicians need to make the difficult decisions and tackle the challenging problems to enable this crisis to pass and people to be treated in a decent humane way.

And we can pray. Pray for the refugees. Pray for those called to dedicate their lives to providing comfort and support. Pray that solutions may be found and peace reached.

My call this weekend is we all examine our hearts and as a church in the Diocese of Liverpool ask what God wants us to do to help our neighbours in need."
