Three Spitfires just went Northish over Chelmsford. Probably en-route to Duxford.

Yah!

At first we thought our chosen spot wasn't near the right place until.....

One flight in the far West crossing the Thames. We thought that one might be a bit distant.
Then 2 flights to the East. Slight grumbles to self that Site B option would have been near. And Then! The last flight of 4 planes flew virtually over head :-D :-D :-D
OH thinks they were 1 Hurricane and 3 Spitfires.
He's captured them on camera unlike his other specks against the clouds or my cloudscapes.
An hour's worth of blowing the cobwebs away and our private air-show to boot.

Heard the yellow flight go over our house in north Chelmsford on its way to Duxford but didn't get out quick enough to see them.
Blast!

The distant ethereal sound of a Merlin engine ... a wild animal once heard never forgotten the very sound of freedom.

not that some people care

Sharron Report 15 Sep 2015 15:47

I thought I had heard a helicopter but , when I looked out, it turned out to be a bomber, I think, which was then way on over the trees towards Selsey.

A long time later I heard what I thought was the sound of a Spitfire but didn't see it through the trees.

A couple more groups of planes came over with big spaces between them.

I would have had a much better view from the front of the house but my neighbour with dementia wanted to see them and he has his safe area at the back of the house where he can't escape so I stayed round the back with him.

Spitfires always make me think of hot, lazy, summer afternoons and I really don't know why.

Sharron, you may not have had as good as view as you might have, but you kept an elderly man company. That's the most important thing.
Did they bring back any memories or is he too young?

Some of the BoB News Reels show people harvesting in the fields - perhaps that's were you get the summer days feelings from.

Sharron Report 15 Sep 2015 18:10

He was twelve at the time and he says he was working on the farm which I can believe as I had my first job at ten.

It all happened over here I believe.

No idea which planes these were. Any ideas?

This may be a later photo of the same flight, but showing 4 planes instead of 3.

xYellowx - Edit - Purple! Flight – 3 Spitfires, 1 Hurricane.

View looking North across to Essex. It looks better on a full screen than the Keepsafe.

Your second photo shows the Blenheim and presumably the three Spitfires with it are adjacent to it in the list.

Look at the aircraft in http://www.battleofbritainday.co.uk/#!aircraft/c1vpn to see if you can match the colour schemes.

RolloTheRed

RolloTheRed Report 16 Sep 2015 12:21

One of my rellies flew a Blenheim during the Battle of Britain. They were used to attack Luftwaffe airfields with varying degrees of success. My rellie stayed alive and went on to fly Mosquitos which was quite another story.

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 16 Sep 2015 12:21

Thank you Ken - that's really useful.

They must have been from Orange or Yellow, which means the Spitfires we identified came from Purple flight! That was definately the last one which came over. It was on a different flight path which makes sense.
Shall edit accordingly

magpie

magpie Report 16 Sep 2015 15:45

They flew right over our house at Swindon so we had a grandstand view. I waved to them, but I don't think they saw! It was a splendid sight.
I had two rellies in the RAF, one, my stepfather survived, the other my natural father did not. Stepfather was in the Far East, and was POW, but that's another story.

Sharron

Sharron Report 16 Sep 2015 18:24

One that flew over me had two different colours which may have been black and white on it.

I have tried to see it on the television films but couldn't.

Sharron, if you look at the link below it shows the colour schemes of the individual aircraft.
