and I just had to cross the road to read a notice on someone's gate. Homemade notice in cellophane reading "Please do not park outside this house unless you are visiting" Do you think they have bought the bit of road as well as there house lol?

May be not, but it can be irritating if people park there then say commute from the station.
If the occupiers have to go out, or have regular medical/care vistors it wil be awkward if they can't find a parking space close by.

I live next to a school and have to tell people not to visit when the school chucks out.

When Fred was alive I had to organize doctors, nurses, ambulances, equipment deliveries round it.

What is even worse is school fete and sports days when people park anywhere they can, either side of the road and on the pavement so wheelchairs cannot get through.

We live on a road with houses one side and the beach on the other. It is very difficult to drive in/out if people park opposite the gate and as for the few who park outside the gate, blocking the entrance completely ........ :-| :-| :-| :-| :-|

Perhaps leave a note asking for an invite! ;-)

magpie Report 25 Sep 2015 18:17

We used to live in a village with a river and beach going through it, and sometimes in the summer you couldn't move for people, and at times we were unable to get the car out for cars parked over our entrance. OH used to put bollards out, and the cheeky b's would even move them in order to park. Nightmare, we were glad to move!!!

People here do put out objects to block out a parking space in front of their house .................. I've seen very large paint cans, red traffic cones, small garbage cans, etc.

This is especially common close to shopping areas, or in tourist areas, but it is also done outside a house where there is a disabled person or health visitors need to visit and park close.

Unlike magpie ............... these are honoured by drivers.

It is also quite common here for the local municipality to agree to designate areas as Parking with Permit Only.

There must be a municipal by-law to allow that designation, then the homeowners on a block or street can get together to petition the Planning Department to agree to add their area to the list.

Again, such signs are usually honoured ............... there will be no cars parked in front of those houses while drivers are going round and round in circles trying to find a spot.

It is also illegal here to park within 30' of a road junction ........... whether that is minor or major ........... and most people honour that as well, going so far as getting out and carefully determining whether they are "safe" or not.

Irritating as it can be, if a car is taxed, insured etc., and parked legally, there is nothing you can do about it. I would not have bought this house without off-street parking, as we are so near to a station giving direct access to the City.

Agree with Bob above.

Well I live no where near a station or school. I just live on a housing estate where we all have our own drives, and all drives here take at least 2 cars. There was a car parked outside the house and wondered if someone has done it deliberately.

Ann,
they were only asking politely...

myself I have a garage that is part of a 4 garage forecourt, that is maintained by the council, and I cant insist no one parks there.....although there IS a notice saying that the garages need access

Tis true as Bob says......BUT if you have a dropped kerb they have to park clear of it!!

Sounds as if there may be a bit local agro going on
His car and her car live on the drive.
They or close neighbours have adult children who have to park on the road.

TBH. we had a hissy fit the other day. First thing there were quite a few tradesmen's vehicles around. An ordinary car parked over-lapping our drive. 4 hours later when the road was otherwise clear, it was still there....and we wanted to go out!!!
"Oh, sorry. Is it in the way?"
Why did he think he was asked to move it???

Highway Code rule 242, page 82, and Road Traffic Act 1988. Section 86 of the Traffic Management Act 2004 quotes an exception.

In WA it is an offence to park in such a manner as to cause an obstruction to a person's access to their driveway. Also, on all roads, you can only park in the direction of the traffic flow

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 26 Sep 2015 00:19

Allan ..............

it is the same here in BC, and I think also the rest of Canada.

Nor can you park up on the sidewalk.

Elizabeth2469049 Report 26 Sep 2015 00:35

in UK as well, just looked it up in the Highway Code! - Rule 239 - but I've never seen it enforced and frequently see it done (tough it does mean in any traffic you have to drive across anything coming the other way) I don't think it is generally known.

Allan

Allan Report 26 Sep 2015 00:35

Sylvia, it is the same in WA regarding parking on the sidewalk

Before we started driving in Australia we were warned about parking on the opposite side of the road.....a number of times...lolol

However, in Malta it's every man, woman or bus for themselves :-(

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 26 Sep 2015 22:03

we can tell recent immigrants or visitors from the UK .......

........ they park on the wrong side of the road.

That is just an annoyance on a residential street where there are no lines down the centre of the street. BUT ............

It is illegal to cross a central yellow solid line to park on the opposite side of the road, so the car would be towed, and the driver would get a fine and/or penalty points

............. as well as well and truly honked at as s/he made the manoeuvre :-D
