Cyns

Please explain why outlook wont send mail but accept mail/spam

Have you opened documents in Word (that were created before the 10 update)

Don't know if this helps - but when I had to replace Word (deleted for former owner's privacy) with Open Office in Windows 7 I was provided with access via Microsoft Word Viewer. It only gives access to read, you can't edit it - but I was able to copy and paste several vital reference papers

If you own a valid copy of Office (including Word) then of course you can use it

Cynthia Report 3 Nov 2015 08:04

Yes.....I have documents from way before I upgraded......no probs in opening them.

Gins......it must be the way you are looking at the screen! :-D

I've been wondering what all the fuss was about with Windows 10 as I've found very little difference from the Windows 7 we had on one computer and the Windows 8 on the other. Slightly different layout but everything works exactly the same and I can access everything I could before.

What have you done Gins? :-D

Gee

Gee Report 3 Nov 2015 10:10

I do have a valid copy of 'office'

I don't know what the hell has happened but this morning I rolled back to Windows 8.1

:-)

No probs at all here on both my desktop and OH's laptop. Installed in August and the only tweek we had to make was to change the date format which defaulted to the US version.

My wife's hotmail failed to sync using WLM but adding her account to the W10 mail client kicked it back to life. On the otherhand, my email using Thunderbird worked ok first time.

Everything else works as before. I have Microsoft Office 2003 and it is still going stong! - the laptop has Open Office.

The main thing we noticed was how much faster it was than W7 which it replaced, especially startup which is quicker by a magnitude.

I have office 2013, Windows 8.1

Why would I need to buy Apps to use Office software?

As you say you upgraded in Aug, I wonder if they have been tweaking W10 along the way

I hated it and it's gone!

InspectorGreenPen Report 3 Nov 2015 13:40

MS Office 2013 is reportedly compatible with Windows 10.

I never upgraded to W8 as it received terrible reviews but many who did upgrade couldn't wait soon enough for W10 to come along so they could get rid.

At the end of the day you pays your money and makes your choice as the saying goes, but for many, upgrading to W10 has been a positive move.

You mean whether to upgrade or not?

Updated this morning and no problems.

If you are not sure about whether you want to take the plunge or not there are a couple of options open to you.

1. Create a dual boot machine - this means that both your existing version of Windows and W10 run on the same computer - you choose at start up which one you want to use.

2. Run W10 in a virtual machine - this means that you are running it on your existing machine (and existing set up is therefore not affected) in a safe/protected environment. Think of it being a bit like taking a test drive.

Neither of the above are too tricky to set up and will enable you to evaluate W10 and test existing software without making major changes.

Gee Report 3 Nov 2015 16:39

I wonder if there was a glitch when it downloaded? Seems odd that Word docs defaulted to Wordpad

Emma, it's really easy to roll back to your current Windows if you don't like W10

Settings and then security, it takes about 3 clicks and your back to your old version. You shouldn't lose any of your files but you might have to reinstall your Apps

Back everything up on an external drive before you do anything!

I haven't upgraded yet as i do like W7. My OH has and he gets annoyed at having to put his password in every time he goes to use the PC, He also runs Vista on the same machine.

Errol is revealing a little bit of ankle and his vast technical knowledge.
;-)

For those tempted to give it a go this is a fairly friendly how to:
http://www.howtogeek.com/197647/how-to-dual-boot-windows-10-with-windows-7-or-8/?PageSpeed=noscript

A VM (Virtual Machine) is a piece of software that let's you set up one or more pretend computers hosted on your real one. They have various uses one of which is to try things without making permanent changes.

Windows 10 can be installed on a VM running under Windows 7, Linux or Apple OS. Win8.x too probably. There are various places where you can pick up a VM at prices varying from free to quite-a-lot. First time out Microsoft's own (free) is a good bet:

and then do the installation

I know with earlier builds of W10 there were issues with default programmes and file associations but this is easy enough to change...

Go to Control Panel and then click Programs followed by Default Programs where you can change various default programs and their file types.
