I rang Ancestry again this afternoon as I was still getting this "{{'REMOVE CROP' I18N }} coming up when using Internet Explorer.

They said they could not find what was causing it but in future I would have to use Chrome.

How do you add a surname to a woman when you only had her christian name on ANC. Blowed if I can figure it out.

Click on the person in the tree.

Select Quick Edit

Type in the surname and Save

Just spent 2 hours with my little FH group at the library. Was expecting to have to try and show them the new look BUT Ancestry Library edition (found in Libraries, FHSs, etc) still has the old style.

The Library edition must be for serious users ( ;-) ) as it also has printable forms, such as record sheets and tree blanks.

So might not renew my own sub and just use the library one - it's only a five minute walk.

What's the best way to contact ancestry?

I want to complain about one of their new changes. When i'm looking at other peoples trees I sometimes email the tree owner and point out an error. If nothing happens I add it as a comment and everyone looking at that person on the tree can see a comment has been made. Very useful to help other people perpetuate errors.
Now there is no way of knowing if a comment has been made unless you activate the drop down boxes on the right hand side. Something you wouldn't do if you were not expecting it.

Hi Namelessone.
I contacted Ancestry through their facebook message page. They answered within the hour and checked on my tree. Everything was sorted by the end of the evening. Somehow one of my trees had merged with the others and the original tree had disappeared. They talked me through the corrections and all is now well.

Hi Teresa

I don't do FB and as this is more of a complaint I doubt I'd get that quick a reply ;-)

I've now emailed them at support, but I don't suppose they will care as I am not one of their young ipad/app users :-| :-D

Thanks Alan
I'm not actually having a problem with my tree (I don't have one) it is that I don't like the fact that they have hidden away the comments box so that when looking at the new Storyline or facts on a person you can no longer spot that a comment has been made.

Who would look at the drop down box if you didn't know a comment could be made?

I had the same problem the other day .......... actually regarding a "sister" for my grandfather. A problem caused by two brothers marrying wives with the same name, and then both dying before the 1891 Census leaving two mothers who moved from the home village to the same Lancashire town, and with children of the similar age.

Easy to sort out IF you only looked at censuses and double checked information!

I would have loved to comment on each of the 4 or 5 trees that had copied the wrong information ...... but couldn't find any Comment Box. I didn't think of looking in the drop down boxes :-(

nameslessone Report 19 Dec 2015 11:40

I'm beginning to feel there is no point using the comment box to correct information as there is no indication to other users that one has been made. I only found the drop down box because I was relooking at a tree and was positive I had previously commented.

Another sign that Ancestry are not interested in real people and real ancestors.

How can I see what relationship someone is to another. It used to be easy with the caption: your relationship under someone's name. I do wish they would leave things as they were, if it aint broke don't fix it. Seriously considering leaving Anc when subs are due.

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 19 Dec 2015 14:19

It should be on the person's profile page immediately below their name eg
1st cousin 4 x removed.
If you click on it, you get the line of relationship (to the 'Home' person)

Alfred Priestly (1857 - )
1st cousin 4x removed
[ as it happens, he was born to a single mother]
|
Fanny Priestley (1839 - 1899)
mother of Alfred Priestly
|
William Priestley (1791 - 1881)
father of Fanny Priestley
|
Mary Priestley (1817 - 1890)
daughter of William Priestley
|
THOMAS PRIESTLEY Barnatt (1840 - 1920)
son of Mary Priestley
|
Eliza Amelia Barnatt (1861 - )
daughter of THOMAS PRIESTLEY Barnatt

etc etc

Hi DetEcTive

I've never come across that on Ancestry trees - I've tried one several and none of them has a relationship link.

Can you take this idiot through how to do it and where to look?

Ta!

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 19 Dec 2015 15:48

Sorry - I can't!

Revisiting the profile page for Alfred Priestley, the example, it's disappeared :-S

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 19 Dec 2015 16:17

It was on the original version - you used to be able to click 'view relationship to me' or words to that effect.
Alfred was only added today, so it definately wasn't carried over from the old version
