DO YOU THINK PAEDOPHILES CAN EVER BE REHABILITATED?
Leading child protection police officer Chief Constable Simon Bailey has said paedophiles who view indecent images but go no further should not be jailed but rehabilitated.
Figures show the number of child abuse reports is up by 80% in three years. The Home Office said 'viewing child abuse images is a terrible crime and should be treated as such'.
Do you believe paedophiles can ever be rehabilitated?

No, who would want to risk their child/Grandchildren living next door to a maybe reformed one ?

Sharron

Sharron Report 21 Apr 2017 14:56

There are many paedophiles who recognize their predeliction as abhorrent and deliberately do not give in to it. They do not choose to be born that way.

The real crime in viewing child porn is not in the viewing but in the filming which can only be contrived by exploitation and cruelty, as, quite often, is adult porn. Viewing is supporting those who support the films.

Agreed, not a choice but wouldn't want one next to youngsters.....and yes I know many are never known to us you'd hardly shout it from the rooftops. Hopefully one day someone will find a solid way of "reforming" them but right now....

Sharron Report 21 Apr 2017 15:11

I think there are probably many living next door to children but are no threat at all. It is just a thing they have, that they know is not right and which they control.

It is only like me wanting very badly too set about one of my neighbour's daughters with a bit of 4x2 but I don't because it is just wrong.

I suppose, in a broad sense, if you look at it as a form of mental health problem; is there not always a chance that something will 'kick off' their need to give in to their urges? I don't think any of us are qualified to say. I am not sure that I would be willing to take the risk of having them living near children. Which is also a worry when they are placed in the community and the community don't know. And I do realise that they would be in danger if some members of the community knew. A difficult question Joy.

In the sense that those who are able to realise that what they have done is wrong, they can then seek help/strategies not do it again. Sublimation of natural instinct in effect, I wouldn't say that is impossible in some cases.

It may be that reports are up 80% for various reasons, ie following on from Yewtree, the various investigations into children's homes etc more people are coming forward than previously.

There was a recent case not far from here " X had started by looking at normal adult pornography sites and got talking to other users and they started to share images....distribution was the more serious offence as “making” did not mean production, but rather downloading of both still and moving images."

He apparently had already put himself on a sex offenders’ course before the case came to court, and admitted he had a problem. Everyone knows where he lives, presumably one step out of line and it will be known about.

If as in this case it's a step on from 'normal' porn to other types, is that not similar to drugs?...some people can stop at cannabis, never deal, never take more, some have to go on to something harder to get the same effect.

Whether they go to prison or not, you would hope rehabilitation would be available, otherwise at the end of a prison sentence there is not likely to be any change is there? The police will know, but probably no one else will be aware who they are living next door to,since these people don't come with horns and a tail there is no way of knowing...it could be your new neighbour.

No but looking should be treated as a mental health issue. Prison is expensive, pointless it just makes things worse. The authorities must monitor and track them on a permanent basis.

It is far harder to block this sort of thing out of computer networks than our luddite politicians seem to think. A mass switchover to ipv6 would def kill off a lot of scams and kiddie porn. It would also break govt snooping in UK, Oz

By their actions ye shall know them.

I personally think No too
I would not want anybody like that living anywhere near me or my family

But their again I've been told every street has at least one
Thankfully If there's any on our road I don't know them :-D

A true case of ignorance is bliss, we all know in theory there is one living now near all of us but once you know it's totally different....

I think everybody's server provider
Should monitor the usages of their clients
and flag sites containing this sort of things

Then report them to the Police :-( :-(

I also think every child deserves the best Childhood possible
why should some nut Rob them of this

There's Plenty of disused oil rigs in the North sea
Shove them on there with a fishing rod and a water purifying kit
and leave them all there forever

Sharron

Sharron Report 21 Apr 2017 19:41

Maybe it was not having the best possible childhood that made them paedophiles. Should their parents be put on the oil rigs for depriving their own children of the childhood they should have had to develop an appropriate sexuality.

Many years ago, when I was an LSA at the local school, we had a case of a couple of paedo's luring young boys.
We had a local shop at the time, and I remember seeing these two 'men' walking by, on their way from the shop, with a Rottweiler. They had recently move to the area.
Anyway, when it all came out - we LSA's weren't told who the children were, but were told we were not to talk to them about it.
I asked what we should do if the boys talked to us about it (bearing in mind we weren't told who they were) - and we were told we would be in trouble :-0

This was, yet again, the 'academics' (psychologists) talking out of their posteriors!

We were like second mothers to many children and soon sussed out who the victims were - and they could/would say things to us that they wouldn't say to their parents.
Fortunately, despite her warning via the psychologist, the headmistress ignored the times one or other of us just sat with one or other of these boys, listening to them, and giving them hugs.
It was bl**dy hard - we all had children.

Children are abused to fulfil the 'need' of online paedophiles. This should not happen. These websites should be shut down. Abusers prey on vulnerable children. Why the hell can't children be vulnerable - why are they seen as 'acceptable' victims - it's the vulnerable we, as a humanity should be protecting.
Yes, paedophiles may have had a 'bad' childhood, but why perpetuate the situation by allowing them to ensure other children have a 'bad' childhood too?

Sometimes I think animals are treated better than children in this country.

I have posted this story before.

One day, when I was working in the street in Waterlooville, I noticed a woman in a clothes shop acting in a most peculiar fashion. She was bending over and pumping her finger up and down at the floor. Then I noticed she had a group of young girls of about twelve or thirteen with her and she was ranting at the one who was crying and looking shocked and was evidently her daughter.

The woman marched off looking like she had won an enormous battle leaving the little girl almost hysterical. Luckily the girl had her friends with her to comfort and support her, and they did, and, luckily, it was me in the street and not somebody looking for a vulnerable girl who was alone , to comfort.

In my opinion, that little girl had been set up to be vulnerable, it is the job of a parent to protect their child.

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 22 Apr 2017 00:52

I agree, Sharron, it is the job of the parent to protect their child, unfortunately, some parents are vulnerable themselves, just plain nasty, or unaware of what's going on, but the vulnerable child shouldn't be seen as a 'worthwhile' victim.

When I realised the paedo's had regularly passed by my house, I questioned my children. Apparently, they (the paedo's) had invited them to stroke the dog.
They didn't.
They'd been taught to ask the owner if they could stroke the dog.
The owner inviting them to stroke the dog was alien to them.
A simple, slight and subtle role reversal that fortunately, my children had seen.
Nothing to do with my 'teaching' more to do with their 'gut instinct'.

I knew a young man who committed suicide. Yes, he was a paedophile, just as his father had been. He knew nothing else.

They should be treated and dealt with appropriately - read into that whatever you like.

I am concerned that the children who are abused in the most vile ways have no say and are rarely rehabilitated themselves.

IF every man or woman with these vile desires were punished severely then maybe in a couple of decades the number of children being subjected to these horrors will decrease because the punishment for simply viewing the videos/pictures will impact their lives to such a point that they may be discouraged.

As for those that do the abusing - no punishment is too severe.
