Is there a bigger problem than usual with the site timing out? Both when trying to get on the site and also getting on threads and submitting replies?

To get on the chat board I have several times had to go to the home page and access community from there.

Same for me Ann, I have just come in via home page after clicking on logo. I will try 'turning it off and on again' ;-)

Seems like a mixed reply then some having problems, some not. I am on Firefox maybe it is them but it has been like it for a couple of days for me.

Caroline Report 19 Sep 2017 16:38

Not having problems myself right now but is it maybe tied in with the other problems some have had these past few weeks?

Kense

Kense Report 19 Sep 2017 17:00

As usual it is the most prolific posters who are affected.

Kense

Kense Report 19 Sep 2017 18:23

That's why you are not having a problem Joan.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 19 Sep 2017 18:58

It is not always the prolific poster who has problems!

I've had no problems at all :-)

BTW ............. I use Firefox, but my server is one that no-one outside Canada will have.

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 20 Sep 2017 13:24

puzzled as to why you think it is the most prolific posters (do you mean those that keep the boards going?) who have a problem. Seems logical to me that if you don't post you won't have a problem. :-S

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 20 Sep 2017 21:54

I think Ken means that those of us who have a lot of posts get the problems .......

not sure whether that is because we have lots of posts, or because we are more likely to see problems because we are obviously on here more often

Kense

Kense Report 20 Sep 2017 23:03

It is probably a bit of both Sylvia.

However the fact that when the problem occurs it is possible to access the site via the Home Page implies that the extra processing needed to assemble the thread information if you enter via a board or via My Threads is critical.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 21 Sep 2017 00:43

but you can see I have over 40,000 posts, I am not having the same problems as others with fewer

FWIW ................ I come straight on to the Boards Summary page, then click on My Threads. After checking threads on there, I then open General Chat, Genealogy Chat and Find Ancestors, one at a time..

Kense Report 21 Sep 2017 09:26

Sylvia, it is possible that when you go into the GR site it is at a time when the servers are operating normally, but those in the UK tend to join at peak times.

Also the information on the Board Summary page is the same for everyone and is readily available, apart from the icons that is. I am dubious as to whether the icons are properly displayed as in my case all boards indicate new postings but I know I have read all threads on Announcements, WDYTYA, and Suggestions.

I haven't had any recent problems getting onto the site. These days I normally enter directly to the General Chat board - I used to prefer the Genealogical Chat board but very little of interest gets posted there now.

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 21 Sep 2017 12:33

I usual enter directly (via my bookmarks) to the General Chat board. More often than not lately though it times out so I have to click on the Genes heading on the error announcement and go to Home page and then to the General chat board. Not a real problem, just aggravating and I wondered why it was suddenly doing it, knowing that the techies were fiddling last week trying unsuccessfully to find why the 'watched threads' were not generating e mail alerts.

I am also getting errors when adding to threads but no problem with that as I know that is a 'porky' and it will have added. :-D :-S

Ken .................

I'm not sure you are correct with your estimate of when I am on here vs busy times. This is my first visit of the day .............. it's 9:40 am here, I guess that means about 5:40 pm in the UK

I normally do other things for at least 90 minutes, so would be back between 7 to 8 pm UK time, then on and off for 3 or 4 hours

what is/are the peak times??

I would have thought after 7 pm was one of them, certainly that's when I seem to get immediate responses to anything I post.

The overseas guys tend to be on here later .............. midnight or after UK time.

Have to admit though that GR is by no means as busy as it once was. Sometimes there are no new posts on any board for hours after about midnight UK time. I usually spend my time doing other things then, where I would once have been helping on Genealogy Chat or Find Ancestors.

GlasgowLass Report 22 Sep 2017 00:34

I am not experiencing any error messages but, for the last 2 or 3 weeks i find that the GR home page is really slow to open.

I have tried using Google Chrome, Safari and Firefox but, it makes no difference.

The GR home page still takes about 30-40 seconds to fully open

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 22 Sep 2017 01:26

at least GR doesn't freeze my computer as one site that I have been looking at has done every night this week

It's a legit site, British Expats, but I have to keep turning off the power because everything freezes up.

I find the site interesting, but I think I am going to have to deny myself the pleasure!

JoyLouise

JoyLouise Report 22 Sep 2017 12:46

It has been a pain for a couple of weeks now, taking ages to access stuff.

During the last week I've not posted as often as I did previously but the site is still a pain.

Gremlins, d'ya think?

Just sprung to mind - is GR discriminating against those who pay the least per annum?

Those who have already joined the thread may like to say whether they have full membership or minimum, thereby proving or disproving my 'theory'.

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 22 Sep 2017 13:12

JoyL I have minimum.
